What kind of rig gives you the best casting distance?
I'm currently fishing mainly for porgies and bluefish from a pier, and the biggest issue is being able to get my bait all the way over to where the fish usually group. I would like to know what kinds of rigs position the sinker and bait in the most optimum and balanced manner which would help Slide Sinker me improve my casting distance and accuracy. By observing the guys out in the boats and the places where they seem to find the most fish, it seems that the best spots for me to drop my bait is only about 30-50 feet outside my current casting range. I figure that a rig with a single hook (as opposed to some dual drop rig) makes casting less awkward and reduces air resistance somewhat. Should I use a sliding sinker, or a bank sinker tied at the same distance from the swivel as the bait hook, or what? Thanks for any ideas, folks.That's a good point, Artie. But I use cut bunker (treated with salt) and squid, which are tough and rubbery enough to handle the stresses from a long cast.
