In this review of Doug Hannon, I’m going to show you both the good and the bad. After all, what’s a review without some honesty, right? First, I have to tell you upfront that Doug Hannon is my favorite choice. Sure, there’s other products in the same class, but frankly, none of them as good (in terms of quality). I do have to say this though. some other products may be better, but based on quality and price, Doug Hannon is the clear winner.

I’ve fished with the DH Snakes. They work “OK” in Deep South streams and ponds, but, in my opinion, aren’t worth the money. Like other people have suggested, there are cheaper lures available that work approx the same. And unless your in an environment where Bass have grown accustomed to eating snakes, the DH is just another weedless Topwater lure. And the fact is, there are other Topwater lures out there that work better….. Here are some ideas :1. Manns, Hardnose Floating Snake- (If your dead-set on a Snake, here is a good one! Floats a 5/0 hook and does not tear-up easily. Look under the Soft Plastics category, then the Hard Nose area.) http://www.mannsbait.com/2. Spro, Frog- Basically, snakes aren’t in every environment, but Frogs ARE! I’ve caught more Bass with a Spro Frog in 2 years than with 10″ floating “Snakes/Worms” in 30!! I highly recommend this lure- http://www.basspro.com/SPRO-Bronzeye-Frogs/product/73278/-1204130The key to fishing Spro Frogs??? You MUST use Braided line, (or extremely heavy Mono, 17-20LB). Why?? Braided line has NO stretch. If you use a lighter Mono line the stretch will allow you to lose fish. And, although 17-20LB Mono will work, you just can’t get the casting distance you need to throw this lure with that heavy a line. (ALL Topwater lures need to be far enough away from the caster to work properly- at least 40-50 yards) SO, an 8/40 Braid is needed…….Personally, I don’t like to use Braid on my casting gear, (except for Flippin’/Pitchin’), so I have a 7′ MH Spinning outfit designated for Froggin’. (That’s how productive Froggin’ is- I have a rod designated to it “specifically”….) 3. Berkley, Powerbait 10″ Worm- Although this worm does not float, it is my “go to” Worm. If I could only fish one brand of Soft Plastics, it would be Powerbait. The only problem with PB is it’s price tag and it’s durability. But, it definitely works WELL! Highly recommended- http://www.basspro.com/Berkley-PowerBait-Original-Power-Worm-10/product/73982/-1205914 These 3 lures have a MUCH better reputation than the DH Snake and , in my opinion, will work better for your situation. Hope this helps ya? Good luck!

Two thumbs up to DD. I think DD covered the Q well, but I would say this about ANY Topwater lure. Like ANY lure there is a specific time and place it would work best. Most Topwater lures work “best” during low light conditions, (cloudy Days, Dusk & Dawn). Does this mean they will ONLY work at these times? NO!One of my best fishing days was in the Spring with a Spook Jr. I caught over 40-50 Bass in an 8 hour period……….BUT, it was Spring and the “frog hatch” had just happened. And Smallmouth Bass will hit a fast moving popper on a blue-bird bright sunny day. Bottom-line? It’s not necessarily the time of day but how aggressive the Bass are……….Hope this helps? My vote is going to DD.

The bass are waiting for the cover of darkness to feed. They like cooler water and if the sun is strong and water swallow bass will feed better at night. If you can work the lure through the lilly pads, try it. what do you have to loose? You can get weedless lures, spoons, and jigger bugs. They all work and they all can fail; that is why it is fishing.

I like them and have cught a few fish with mine over the years but I wish he still made the hannon frog it was the best ever!

actually in spring when the bass are on their respective spawning beds, yes they do. but you need to fish them faster than a normal spawning type of presentation.

Every time I go to Walmart I have to go to the fishing section it’s just one of those things that we do to see if there are any good sales a lot of times they have put some good things in the bargain bins for like half the price and then you can’t help but get them. Ex. I bought 2 Bandit crank baits a couple of months ago for like a buck a piece and a Spro bronze eye frog for like 3 bucks regular price on those are like $ 8. So why not go on the aisle your already in the store.

Here is a testimonial for you. Any time it takes an infomercial to sell a product it may not be a scam, but the lure does not work good enough for word of mouth or regular advertising to sell it. And the videos do not say it is being used in a lake that the average fisherman will never get to fish in his. or her lifetime. I have bought almost every lure that was on TV at one time or another, And none caught fish as well as the everyday normal lures you buy at a tackle shop. If a lure has to have an infomercial to sell it, I do not recommend you buy it.

does it work well? during the spawn and post spawn absolutely, especially where the lake has a good population of snakes drinking from it. Ok so think like the fish. What if you are a decent enough well bred bass and you just spawned with a ten pound female and she left you to protect the bed with 200,000 eggs from predators. I guess the key word in your question is “well” isn’t it? A trick I use from time to time is: I cut the head off of different sized nails and slide them into plastics adding weight that doesn’t show to the fish.

hey man, they are actually a good bait for bass. fish them weightless and fish them slowly. toss them toward the bank if you are in a boat or if you are fishin from the bank toss them towards some cover or branches of limbs that might be sticking out of the water. if you are in a boat and you toss them toward the bank i prefer to actually hit the bank with the lures and work it into the water. i learned to do that fishing with plastic lizards and frogs, kinda gives a more realistic look. once you hit the water let it sit for a sec. or so and let the water calm back down and use the tip of your rod do make the lure move. give it a twitch and let the lure slide on the top of the water and use your reel to retreive the loose line and twitch again to make it move again. keep doing that until you have your lure back to you. remember to use the reel retreive the loose line and let your rod tip make the action. while you are doing that dont be scared when a monstor bass bust the top of the water going after the lure. remember that it is a big lure so when you get a strike dont automaticly set the hook. i know it will be hard not to do that but give it a second or so and then set the hook and drag in your trophey. man i hope this helps you out a bit and i cant wait to see you wall mounter on youtube.good luck good fishin be safe and remember to share the experience

It almost really doesn’t matter what color. When the fish look up at top-water baits, such as snake lures, they see mostly the shadow on the the underside of the lure. The fish zero in on the water displacement, smell, and shape. Other factors depend on it also, weather conditions, water clarity, etc. So it really is a personal preference. But, if you have to choose, the white or black sounds good, or natural colors.

if the doctor of bass says it’s so it’s sovariables in weather, high and low pressure systems, storms and earthquakes will change it though and all bets are off .but all being equal, based on moon phases and high and low tides the graph is dead spot on

This is EXACTLY what i asked. check out my question. ive seen this lure on youtube and it looks pretty good, but you have to but 54 of them for 100$. people on my question said this lure is probably fake, but idk. i want it really bad though
December 19th, 2010 at 1:31 am
Yes they are… but! and it’s a big but, only in lakes that can support a fairly large population of snakes around it where the snakes are water savvy. If the lake doesn’t get more than a couple of fall in snakes a year not many bass will have ever seen a snake but in lakes that have water moccasins and the like they are not only deadly they are deadly on big bass.

I don’t have any, I don’t buy into the fishing gimmicks of the world, I don’t even have a Banjo Minnow Kit, but what I have seen on the internet, is they float and they’re a fairly large plastic worm. That’s all they are, a big floating PLASTIC WORM.It might work in places where bass have been known to feed on snakes. It’s a topwater lure. I’m thinking work it like any other topwater; cast it out, let it sit for a couple seconds, give it a twitch, let it sit, repeat. Since it “supposedly” catches thirty-inch, eighteen-pound bass, I would use heavy baitcasting gear, heavy action rod about six-six to seven-feet long and twelve to seventeen-pound line.

I’m going to give you an honest answer, and maybe one you don’t want to hear……….but…….I would not even pay $25 for that rod. Why ? Two reasons:1) The claim that it is made from “24 ton graphite cloth, same as IM-6″is erroneous. IM-6 graphite is at least 38 million modulus, standard graphite is 33 million modulus, you’ve bought yourself a heavy, non-responsive rod, probably OK for live bait and crank-baits, but you could forget about it being a good jig or spinner-bait rod.2) The handle is solid wood, again , this adds (IMO) unnecessary weight and to be truthful, wil deaden the action and will make it less sensitive. Granted, it seems like a novelty and all the bells and whistles are there, I just wouldn’t buy it, though. I really hope you do like it and I am proven wrong, just giving you an honest answer and I mean no hard feelings by it.THe reel (in my VERY limited knowledge of bait-casters) seems like a good deal.
