In rivers and streams I cast out rooster tails upstream and immediately upon it hitting the water surface begin retrieving. As it works back (down stream) to me I watch it as it goes by me off to the side and you’ll see it pick up speed that’s because the water that has all your line between it and you is pulling it faster so I always almost stop reeling and let the current swing the roostertail down (past me) stream and then I reel it up fast and cast again upstream Sometimes I let them sink to a one and two and three count (depends on how deep and fast moving the water is) and in dead water, lakes and ponds I let them sink to the bottom and then I pump the rod to get the blade turning (the tip of the rod will tick with each spin of the blade) if the tip of the rod isn’t ticking then the blade needs another kick start and I think rooster tails are most productive if you can master the retrieve for the blade to turn as slow as possible. I was told the blade turning makes a thumping noise and is similarly confused (by the fish you are hunting for) as the sound a school of baitfish might make.

I don’t think the knot could be the problem, as long as the line is coming straight off the shaft of the lure. If the lure isn’t in line with the line, I guess it would go sideways through the water and not be able to spin. If you mean the Palomar knot, it shouldn’t have this problem. I use it on lots of spinners, and it works fine.On the other hand it’s possible there’s a problem with the lure, even if it’s brand new. (I’ve bought LOTS of stuff which has been defective straight out of the box, from nails to computers.) If the blade doesn’t spin freely when you swing the lure around, that would be the problem. This can be from a bent shaft or a defective part holding the blade on the shaft.

A Rooster Tail spinner is good for just bout’ any freshwater species. As for the best color that is somewhat questionable ie., conditions and a lot of time it be personal preference. Ha’, also it’s goin’ to be what them fisheees moods are and what’s on their menu for the day;). Yup’, you can get them at “Wally World” aka Walmart. Don’t know the price but, it’ll be considerably cheaper then the links I’ve provided ;) …< ' ( (( >
