it’s definitely worth it. on popular bodies of water, this is about the only time of year that they don’t see so much fishing pressure. I would go with a carolina rigged plastic worm with, a bit heavier than usual egg sinker to help compensate for the current. if there are smallmouths, concentrate on where the current, is fastest as, smallmouths love fast moving water. for the other species, work on bank sides and, eddys.

All decent answers from everyone…Something no one has mentioned are topwater lures. Try running a large black zara spook over open water, over submerged veggies or near your lilly pads. You can also use dark colored buzzbaits in these areas as well as right through your lilly pads (buzzbaits are pretty weedless so cast past pockets of open water in the pads and run the lure right over the open pockets.) Id also add a power grub to your buzzbait for an extra little zip to your presentation. The reason for the dark color and this holds true to other lures as well…in heavily stained water, light has trouble penetrating the water due to particles in it. Normally pike love flashy and quite frankly obnoxiously loud and gaughty colored lures. With stained water as well as low light conditions you want to shy away from bright colors and use blacks or dark colors because the fish sees the silloette of the lure better rather then the color of the paint on the lure. It makes sense if you think about it…without the light comming through the water its not gonna light up your lure or reflect off of the shiny surface of your blades on your spinner. Also with stained water, you want to make multiple casts into good areas so the fish can locate the lure. Sometimes youll get em on the third or fourth cast just cause the fish needs time to find it.I dont know if youre familiar with topwater lures but if not…the main thing is when you have a strike, wait till you feel the weight of your fish on your line before you set the hook. Fish will miss the lure sometimes, turn around and hit it again. If they miss just keep your retrieve and they may hit it again.I hope this helps you catch more toothy wolves of the water. Good luck and let the big ones go so you can keep fishin for em in your little pond!

My home lake (the one my campground is on) has tons of small to medium sized northerns. We have had one that looked to be a record breaker a while back while he was ice fishing, but not a trophy catch since. I always catch small northerns on senkos while fishing for bass. That mightbe somethin you wanna try (and you’ll also get some great bass)good luck!

I fish quite a bit for stripers in Northern California and the rig you caught the 7 pound striper on is actually a very good one. I have caught several, up to 24 pounds, fishing for perch and using the same rig.If you are looking for another rig or another way, here goes:1. Try ripping a 4 inch floating rapala with a little red in it somewhere. Rip, let it set for a second three cranks, rip let it set and repeat. The strikes you get using this method can be breath taking.2. Try a large marabou or bucktail jig in the 2oz plus range and work it as you would any other jig. Again, try sing various retrieval techniques until you find the one that works. my favorite colors are white/red or chartreuse/red.3. Use larger plastic swim baits in silver/black or root beer with a black tail.4. Last, but certainly not least. Use that same sliding sinker rig with a heavier sliding sinker and use live smelt for bait. If you use circle hooks they will hook themselves. I just use live bait hooks, don’t ask why. I wait for them to swim away in free spool. When they stop I count to three tighten the line and slam it to em! You had better hang on after that because they will be most unhappy!lolGood catching. Tell me about any big ones. Nothing beats a good fish story, well almost nothing. lol

The “cheapest”, most effective, lure you could purchase would probably be Jigs in various sizes and Berkley Gulp plastic grubs in various colors. I’ve caught every type of fish species in Canada on a Black 1/4 OZ Jig/Black Gulp curly tail grub.Gulp is an outstanding biodegradable bait that has an INTENSE fish attracting scent. Tip ups are very effective with a good sized shiner, sucker, smelt or something like that. Each situation is different so you might have to try different things every time you go out. Usually where I fish, 8 to 12 feet of water with the minnow a few feet below the ice gives the most consistent action. One lake where the panfish hang in almost 25 fow, about 2 or 3 feet above the panfish (near bottom) seems best. Use trial and error to pick up on the things that work. Small details learned from experience can be very important so pay attention to them. Weeds are good. Fish that they feed on are good (panfish, minnows etc.). Northerns can hunt in a foot of water or a hundred feet of water. Don’t be afraid to change spots or techniques if unsuccessful for an hour or two.Jigging is also effective with artificial lures with or without minnows.Don’t forget to use steel leaders.
