If the fish are being really sluggish and you think that you should use a little smaller profile on your jig, then go ahead and trim the skirt. Trim it up no further than just to the back end of the hook. With the rapalas, if they are short biting and nipping at the back end of the feather, then sure, you can trim those also.

trailers actually affect the action of a jig quite alot.i never fish a jig w/out a trailer.trailers are sometimes needed to slow to fall of a jig,or give it a bigger profile.there a re many different types of trailers for a jig.i reccomend experiement with a few differnt types, and allways keep different ones in the tackle box.when worked the right way a trailer may look like a crawdad to a bass, which they love to eat.also u can tweak a jig, which i reccomend also

BooYah! jigs are meant to target smallmouth and largemouth bass. Add a plastic crawfish to the yellow/brown as a trailer, and you’ll be set.The blue/black jig would be better in darker water or at night maybe, and the yellow/brown jig would be better in murky or muddy water.

Diamond jigs would be my first choice. Followed by white/white&red or yellow buck tail jigs in 4oz. to 16oz. weights. For live bait fishing take a medium weight spinning rod use white 1/4 oz jig heads with white grub tails. You’ll be able to catch blue runners or flying fish with this. Have your heavy rig ready catch one live bait.Place hook in the bottom side of the fish far enough behind the anus so as not to puncture the abdomen. this hook placement tends to make the bait fish dive. Good luck!
