I wouldn’t really want to get the cheapest, but a nice rod (In my opinion) for not a lot of cash, is the St. Croix Triumph series. I’m not sure if he prefers Baitcasters or Spinning reels, doesn’t matter, the Triumph series is available in both versions. I’m also not sure if he catches a LOT of Pike, if he does, a medium/heavy action rod will be best. If he only catches them rarely, a medium action will be best.If you’re also looking for a reel (you didn’t state anything about it), for a baitcaster, I’d go with the Dave Fritts Signature Series reel which Fisher_King has said good things about, or the Daiwa Megaforce. Your best bet would be to get the Shimano Citica, which at $120, is a total STEAL. If he wants a spinning reel, the Pflueger President or the Pflueger President XT would work magnificently. For line, a 10lb or maybe even 12lb strong mono such as Trilene XT or Stren or even Berkley Big Game will do.

To start off plenty of hooks and weights of different sizes are important to have due to changing conditions and what not. You seem to have a broad enough selection to catch fish in most conditions. But with that said, do you have different sizes? Colors? Styles? Sizes, color, and variations of different baits are very important to have at all times. For example, a red 1/4 ounce crankbait may work this morning but by noon it may not get a single hit. Maybe fish moved to deeper water and need something a bit bigger and a little lighter in color. There’s all kinds of scenarios to factor in. So again, having different colors, sizes, variations, and deep/shallow diving baits is a must. This applys to any bait be it plastics, spinnerbaits, jigs, etc. I would take each bait that you listed and go out and get the variations of them the best you can. Other than that: rain gear is always nice to have handy. It’s no fun getting stuck in a t shirt and jeans when a down pour happens to come. Scents are always good to have. If fish are tedning to be picky your scents can make a nice difference.Trailers for your jigs. Always fish a jig with some type of trailer. I like chunk trailers best.More top waters wouldn’t hurt. Poppers, Jitterbugs, and Rogues are all great choices.Small jigheads for your Panfish setups. If you like Crappie fishing small floaters and Crappie jigs are a must.

1. Ive never used or seen gulp specifically for pike and walleye but if its made then im sure itd work. Im a bass guy and ive pulled a lot bass out on this stuff when nothing else would work. 2. The rapala floating lures aren’t made for just trolling or not trolling. They’re really productive baits when fished right be it trolling or not.3. Color all dpends on the weather and water conditions. Generally on cloudy overcast days a darker color will be a good bet (blacks, pumpkinseed, and dark blues)On sunnier days a natural or lighter color is best (shad, light blues, and reds)4. For the walleye id suggest fishing a live minnow on a jig head, go with the smallest jig head you can that still gets the bait to the bottom. Its a little hard to do this without a boat sometimes because for the best results you need to fish about vertically and jig the minnow up and down off the bottom. For the pike I like using larger swimbaits. Storm brand swimbaits have a good variation. They have baits that resemble sunfish, crappie, and walleys. 5. The plastic worms won’t do anything for you when it comes to pike and walley. They are made for bass. Spoons are a pretty good bet for the walleys and maybe a pike or 2 but its a little doubtful. You want to fish the spoons similar to like i mentioned for the minnow above. Throw it out and jig it up and down off the bottom fairly slow.

if you live near the river and you have seen it with low water movement you should be able to remember the points sand bars and holes (deeper areas of non moving water) in river fishing always fish up stream bringing your baits into the view of up river facing fish. Predators will hide behind structure where they can scream out and ambush unsuspecting prey. Bass will try and suspend in deeper areas especially if it is in the vicinity of structure like a down tree or a man made wall or bridge standards. Try casting past areas where if you were a fish you would hide and use baits common to your local. Especially trying to get the size and color perfect, leaches, grubs, worms, jig and pigs (for crawdads) crawdads and I use mice quite often I have made many that look similar to one that I own that is over 60 years old. Wood body leather tail and ears topwater lure (Top water baits work amazingly well in slow and calm areas tooI learned before I put on my first football helmet “no guts, no glory” You have to cast into junk brush piles and snagged out logs, branches and caught up junk storms loosen and move downstream. Yeh you will loose some set-ups making casts into unknown submerged structure, but be easy on the loss of invested bait dollars by casting a plain unrigged weight only, it so you can feel the bottom and move the weight along in different distances from shore through that stuff so you can have a good idea where the snags and junk piles are before you put on and loose those all to frequently lost sometimes even expensive baits.I even do this at lakes too, especially when shore fishing to see what I am going to be dragging the fish I catch through to get them to shore and damned if the fish sometimes even hit the plain weight. So I hook up a really small grub in a similar color and bang it’s on. If there are lizards along say a wall or rock structure or even cliffs too, even if the rocks go right on out into the water making a sort of penninsula, use a plastic lizard and cast it upstream onto any (shore line connected) rock just above the waterline and let it sit there a fish might jump out to take it but you will probably get hit when you slowly peel the bait off the rock and it drops quietly into the current. so! fish upstream alwaysbring baits around corners and over sand bars into flowing water fish the upper river side of deeper pools in fact out in front of the deeper areas and let the current drop the bait into the pool, not the cast and what I didn’t mention is being stealth your body when walking next to water is magnified and a dark moving mass which is seen and felt as dangerous by fish try to stay behind trees and low to the ground taking your silouette out of their horizon

A 10`9“ rod for freshwater seems a little overkill, meaning its really heavy for the lures and bait you`ll be using. A rod that long is usually for saltwater surf fishing so you can cast it over the waves. None the less, one of the best things I did when I started fishing as a kid was to keep a fishing log book. Just use a simple notebook and record the air temp water temp, cloud cover, rain/wind etc, time of day, the day month year, the place you fished, the structure- rocks/submerged logs/lilly pads/drops offs/etc, the baits/lures you are using- their style and colors, and then what you caught, if anything. Even after a year you will start noticing trends and patterns to when the fish will bite what they like and what they dont like. As you would with any lake or stream dont think like the fish think like the bait. Match the colors to bait you see in the lake bc thats what they are feeding on. If you see a lot of worms or after a rain you go fishing use worms since they get washed into the lakes, if you see nymphs or larvae use them. If you see baitfish use a lure that matches their size or color.

I don’t know what spinners you have, but I have had great luck with inline spinners (specifically Rooster Tails) this spring.

Never heard of it. The flooding you speak of though has probably forced the pike to move further into the shallows. Pike love very shallow, muddy, and weedy water. As for a setup, I just use a jig and minnow. It has never failed to catch me some. I went pike fishing today and caught about 20 using that method. Good luck fishin’!

Topwater lures have some good results. Diving crank plugs also work well. Topwater lures and rubber baits work best in shallow water in morning and evening, while divers and spinners work best in afternoon. So, you may have the right stuff, but bad presentation and time of use can prevent you from getting results. Also, old rubber worms smell artificial and unappealing, so make sure your rubber baits have scent on them. So my favorite is whatever works that day, but I really like topwater lures and rubber baits, so my best fishing is in the morning.Sorry, no pics, but anyone in the store should know what you are talking about. I would recommend actually shopping in a sporting goods store, because their employees should know what they are talking about (Beware, they have proven this theory incorrect before).Good luck!
