personally, l would consider neither. the ultimate “classic” to me brings pictures to my mind of huck finn and tom sawyer sneaking off with long bamboo or willow poles over their shoulders for a day of catching bluegills and bullhead catfish.come to think of it, that’s how l started. sneaking out before sunrise for panfish. same kind of gear.

I don’t see why not. A lot of those swimbaits do come in more colors than just “rainbow trout”. And they don’t always catch big bass. Smaller ones will hit them too. Don’t forget, a bass will try to eat something half its own size. The smallest bass I’ve gotten on a swimbait is about 4 pounds. This was on a homemade 16″ one.Your best bet is DEAD STICKING a floating swimbait. Cast it out as far as you can and let it sit. If you’re a smoker for instance, light up a cigarette, smoke the entire thing, then after you’re done smoking it, give the bait a little twitch. That’s about… five minutes, give or take a few seconds depending on the brand you smoke. I smoke Marlboro 100s. Anywhoo, when you give it that first twitch, that’s when a bass will usually hit it. A big bass nearby is going to notice that huge splash your bait just made. It’s going to investigate what did it. And it’s going see a trout sitting there not doing a thing. It’s going to continue watching it. Until you make it twitch. This method can take up to 30 minutes to work the swimbait in once. It’s long and tedious, but the reward is usually a hefty one, say 8-pounds plus. With sinking swimbaits, slow steady retrieves work fairy well in deeper water. When fishing shallow, slow-rolling the bottom helps too.Go Muskie – I don’t usually fish swimbaits during the fall, although I do see guys that call themselves “power fisherman” throwing swimbaits constantly all year long. I use swimbaits more during the winter and sometimes into spring, depending when the trout dumps stop. That’s usually about the end of February or March, sometimes as late as April. It works great in all depths. On one point in particular that I like on my home lake goes down to about 40 feet or more when the lake is completely full. When trout are being stocked, they’re dumped at one of two launching ramps, and the water is no more than fifteen feet deep at either ramp. So dead sticking works pretty well (for me at least) at either depth.

  3. Robert B Says:

small single hook and worms, vary the depth at which you suspend it.

  4. Sarah W Says:

It depends on how you are cooking it. I think in general rainbow trout tends to be less fishy than bass. But I do think that bass is better when your serving large quanties of people.

  5. Josh Says:

The best fly to catch both would be a black Wooly Bugger. Followed bu a Clouser Minnow or a Bunny Leach.A nymph is the aquatic juvenile stage of an insect’s life. May flies, stone flies, caddis flies, dragon flies, and damsel flies are some examples of nymphs fly tiers imitate.

  6. Brandon Says:

Brown trout withstand the highest water temps of any trout , And they need to be fairly large bass love to eat trout 12 inches long so size is an issue unless you want real giant bass because trout as food for a bass is excellent .That is why the California lakes hold such big bass is because bass live off trout The brown trout lives in cold or cool streams, rivers, lakes and impoundments. It is more tolerant of siltation and higher water temperatures than brook trout or rainbow trout. A brown trout’s optimum water temperature range is 50 to 60 degrees, although it can tolerate water temperatures in the low 70s.So size and species is an issue I recommend Brown trout 12 plus inches long . If your water doesnt get above 70 degrees you will be ok if there are underwater springs or a creek flowing in the pond that would be good for trout

  7. Ole Fisherman Says:

Abu Garcia makes GREAT bait-casting & conventional reels. (I own 2 C4′s, one C3 and WANT a Revo! lol)However, (for some reason), their Spinning reels are “sub-par” compared to the other top 3 reel company’s, (Shimano, Daiwa, Pflueger). Abu Garcia is just not well known as a “Spinning reel manufacturer” anymore…….Their designs are “archaic” and rarely have the same amount of “bells and whistles” of a comparably priced Shimano, Daiwa or Pflueger. And it is well-known that Abu Garcia is not a “rod builder”.At your budget of $120 I would suggest you purchase a more expensive reel than a rod-something like $70 for the reel and $50 for the rod. A more expensive reel will last longer than a more expensive rod…Here are my picks for you. Please read the reviews on these suggestions-REELS1. Pflueger, President Series- 180 customers give this reel a 4.5 out of 5. I own a couple of these myself and they are tough, well manufactured reels- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_51666____SearchResults (The best part? This reel comes in under your budget of $70!)2. Gander Mt’s, Elite Metal- A “steal” of a buy! Gander Mt has a store-based after X-mas sale which includes 30% off all Gander Mt. rods and reels!! The higher end Gander Mt line of reels are MADE by Pflueger. You can get a Pflueger President/Supreme hybrid reel at Gander Mt for as little as $44!! This reel normally sold for $90. I got one right before X-mas….GREAT reel for the price. It’s construction reminds me of Daiwa’s “Hardbodyz” line. If you can find one of these on sale, GET IT! 3. Shimano, Symetre (old stock)- Many company’s, (including Gander Mt and Cabelas), are getting rid of their old line of Symetre’s to make way for the newer model. Symetre’s originally sold for $100- you can get one NOW for as little as $70, (depending on where you look). Here is a Gander Mt ad selling one for $80- http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?i=411261&pdesc=Shimano_Symetre_Spinning_Reel&aID=504AA1&merchID=4006 These are GREAT reels!4. Daiwa, Exceler- A workhorse reel with a great reputation- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_91206____SearchResultsRODSAt your budget of $50, you actually have very FEW choices for a decent rod for Bass AND Trout. (Unless you find an insane after X-mas deal at one of the “Big Four” sporting goods stores- DicksINC, Cabelas, Bass Pro, Gander Mt) Here is some options:1. St. Croix, Triumph Series- A nice “entry level” St. Croix rod.- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_103653_100002002_100000000_100002000_100-2-22. Fenwick, Iron Hawk Series- A Gander Mt “exclusive”. I own 3 of these rods and they are tough, well-made rods, (‘Course, I got mine for 30% off, which dragged the price down close to $30. But, the first one I purchased “full price” and still felt good about it.). A 7′ medium action would be an excellent length and action for Trout/Bass- http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?i=410577&pdesc=Fenwick_Iron_Hawk_Spinning_Rods&str=ironhawk&merchID=40053. Berkley Lightning Rod Shock Series- There is no denying Berkley makes a good, inexpensive rod. Their new Shock Series is amazingly sensitive. This rod is probably your “best bet” for a super-sensitive rod at a VERY fair price- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_104159____SearchResults4. Ugly Stik Lite- Durable, lightweight, SUPER-inexpensive and MUCH more sensitive than the original Ugly Stik. If you decide to get this product MAKE SURE to purchase the Inshore version; only the Inshore version is “one-piece”- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_17946____SearchResultsAnywho, hope this info helps ya? Good luck in your search.(Thanks for the kudos BC)

live minnows/shiners pending on the size of the trout you are fishing for…also crappie jigs have been well known to catch bass along with trout if fished correctly.

  9. James W Says:

Anise and garlic are both very effective fish attractants.Garlic will work best in freshwater. It will attract trout very well. Raw garlic will have a more potent smell but it could also be a little too spicy for fish. Garlic powder or garlic salt will be easier to work with.Anise will attract both freshwater and saltwater fish well. You can find pure anise extracts at your local grocery store. You can find them at some pharmacies as well. If you can’t find it there, some old style cough syrup containing a lot of anise oil will work too. You can also find pure anise oil at stores that sell aroma therapy stuff/incense. Those anise oil are not intended for human consumption but fish won’t mind. Anise got a potent smell. Do not over use it because many fish will not bite baits/lures containing too much anise.Pure anise extract/oil isn’t that cheap. A small bottle of pure anise oil/extract could cost more than some commercial fish attractants. Commercial attractants are easier to apply and you don’t have to worry about “over dosing” your bait or lure. For inexperienced users, I would recommend commercial attractants over pure anise oil. You will probably need to reapply scents to your lure/bait more frequently with commercial attractants. Luckily, reapplication of commercial attractants is fast and easy and a bottle will last quite a long time.PS: If you decided to use bottled anise extract/oil, don’t try to save a few dollars by getting artificial scents. You will be much happier if you stick with pure oil.

  10. Grand Master Basser® Says:

That’s why you buy plastic worms…http://www.jannsnetcraft.com/soft-plastic-lure-molds/The soft plastic for ‘Creepy Crawlers’ is the wrong kind og plastic, and with the right type of plastic, it gets too hot for the ‘Creepy Crawlers’ mold.

  11. Chelsea Girl Says:

5:4The bass weighs 50 oz, the trout weighs 40ozSo the ratio of the weight of bass to weight of trout = 50:40=5:4

  12. FishingFan73 Says:

Sounds like you are looking for more than just hooks, maybe lures is what you are looking for. As one of the other posters said there are thousands to choose from varying in size and shape. For info on lures see if this may help. Copy and paste if you need to.http://www.bass-fishing-source.com/bass-fishing-lures.html

  14. enufofthisshit Says:

Due to some quirk in your keyboard evidently, you left carp off of your list. Carp by far. Bass next unless you’re in a spot to catch lots of double digit cats.

  15. hillbilly_cupcake Says:

Now Im not sure if you are talking fresh or salt water here. There is a big difference. If the Red Bass you are refering to is Red Fish, it has a firmer meat, not gamey, very good.If you are talking more Red Sea Drum or Snapper, the meat is firmer, but sweet not gamey at all. The Trout if freshwater its sweet and flakey, just melt in your mouth good, no fishy taste. If Sea Trout it is a white meat fish, not as sweet,a little more intense flavor but not gamey at all.If you like catfish, you will be fine with these actually those other fish are much better than catfish…

  16. Joe American usn ret. Says:

Catfish – various stink baits/doughs (Wal-Mart), or cut up frozen mackeral or catch a small fish and cut it up in big pieces (size 1/0 or 1 or 2 hook) with just enough weight to get it out and down to the bottom – or a big fat night crawler on a size 1 or 2 hook.Bass – topwater lures in the early morning or at dusk shiners (3-4 inches long) anytime with a bobber or w/out crayfish (2-3 inches) hooked in the tail size 4 hook on bottom no sinker nightcrawlers no sinker or weight small bluegill later in the day shallow running crankbaits or spinner baitstrout small / med size night crawlers, salmon eggs w/ clear bobber mealworms /waxworms (size 16 hook w clear bobber) small rooster tails, mepps algia or black fury (dressed) berkley power bait (yellow works best for me) but be sure to have at least 3-4 colors yellow, chartruse, FL orange and pinksize 16 treble hook(if you plan on keeping the fish) single hook for catch & release.hook >>> 15-20″ 2lb or 4lb leader >>>size 14 barrel swivel >>> 1/8 oz egg sinker roll the dough just enough to cover up the hook barbsGood luck fishing…

Many of the local parks that have sizable ponds get stocked by the city and fish and game with trout during the winter months. The DFG will have the stocking schedule for your area. Pay sites for fishing trout and bass are fairly limited in L.A. you have to go down to the Orange County area to Santa Ana River lakes or Irvine Lake. Up in our local mountains the east and west forks of the San Gabriel rivers have trout. Puddingstone Lake, Castaic Lake, and Pyramid lake are well known for their bass. Eldorado park lakes is stocked with trout catfish and has a few bass very finicky taking only the best presentations it’s popular with they fly bass fisherman. Peck road lakes also has all three again very finicky. Again check the dfg plants and see what’s closest to you.http://www.dfg.ca.gov/fish/Hatcheries/FishPlanting/SouthCoast.asp

  18. FishSteelhead Says:

What with your livin’ in west “Sacto”, I’d suggest Folsom Lake, Lake Natoma both have Trout, Crappie, Bass and Kokenee Salmon + other species, the American River (trout and Steelhead) ta’ name a few. Might be a short drive, but Sacto., ain’t the spread out, at least if ya’ got a vehicle :)

  19. CamCox Says:

I am from Texas so the trout here are stocked annually and pretty much the only time to catch them for us is cold months. Blue cats, channel cats, and bull heads are all great during the summer months and I have had fairly good luck in october and december with blue cats. I caught my biggest largemouth bass in december, but catch more in the summer months. I have been catching hybrid stripers (palmetto bass) alot lately. and carp are EXCELLENT in the summer down here, not so great in the coldest months. For cats I have good luck off Cut Shad and stink bait, bull heads are best off natural baits like night crawlers, for largemouth bass I use a Berkely soft plastic worm 7″ or a Rapala rat-l-trap. For hybrids and stripers I use any thing white or shiny…spoons or shad lures. for carp I just use corn on a single hook.
