Can saltwater fishing lures work for freshwater fishing?
Hey, I just bought "Gulp, New Fishing Lures Penny" shrimp lures thinking they would be good for freshwater fishing. Little did I know but they are used for saltwater. Will they work when I go freshwater fishing?

* Deep subject. Really. I also live in Upstate (Western) NY. Too many types of fish or water in Upstate for a short answer. Besides, there’s no difinitive method/lure for any specific species. Deep trolling, spin casting, bait casting, jigging, bottom fishing, fly fishing, float fishing, bank fishing, bridge fishing, boat fishing, deep lakes, ponds, rivers, streams, spoons, buzz baits, plugs, plastic worms, surface lures, divers.Watch a few fishing shows on the Outdoor Channel.

Try small Jigs (1/8-1/4) with a Berkley Grub or Leech.A small Husky Jerk minnow works well. 4″ Senko fished SUPER slow on a Texas Rig(Using the “dead stick” retrieve). Here in MN I’ve noticed a “trend” in cold water Bass fishing: Small lures with very little “large movement” action works best!My favorite? A black 1/8 oz marabou Hair-jig under a “dial-a-depth” float. Hope this helps? Good luck!

Get pretty much the same ones that your buddy has.As far as topwater lures go, Heddon Zara Spooks, Rebel Pop-Rs, and Lobina Ricos. Plastics, definitely add Gary Yamamoto Fat Ikas to your list.

I’m leaving in a few days to OCNJ and will probably be fishing off the 6th street jetty, under the 52nd street bridge and maybe go out on one of the fishing junk tours. When I”m on land I typically get my larger ugly stick and cast out a multi rig with squid and let that go in the current. I then use my deep sea rod to cast out by the peirs and although lures sometimes work the squid bait is very commonly used because it works. If you want larger fish, off a boat you can use bait fish that can be caught or bought, single hook them through the top under the dorsal but don’t go through the spine so they move. Really though what I would do is visit one of the bait and tackle shops and ask for advice – they will hopefully set you up with a good rig to start out with.

They’re called “blades” and adding them to anything other than a spinnerbait or any type of spinner CAN and WILL ruin the action of the lure.Should you put one on a Rat-L-Trap? The answer is HELL NO.Your spinnerbait should be equipped with either one or two from the factory, sometimes three in either a willow leaf blade, Colorado blade, Indiana blade, or a combination of the three called a “tandem”.

I will do my best with this one. If you are pond fishing I only take these lures when fishing ponds. 1. H&H single spinner spinner bait in black and gold and white and black. (just remember to put the hooks on before use)2. Heddon tiny torpedo in clear or frog colored.3. Rapala broken tailed minnow in Black top tan bottom or black top silver bottom4. Smithwick Devils horse again I like a frog colored in this lure.5. Bass Assasin bag of worms black with pink tail. Plus #3 hooks and 1/4 ounce sinkers. That is basically all I take with me when I am fishing stock ponds. as far as lures go. I do have success with perch but nothing beats live bait for those guys and a plain old bobber. Now if you are planning on lake fishing the tactics and lures are endless on what could be best for your area. Except the live bait recommendation for perch your area could be drastically different. I would go to my local tackle store or your neighborhood Wal-mart and simply ask the sporting goods person what people are buying. Tackle Stores are alot better then Wal-mart due to the fact that chances are they guy working the counter at the bait shop shares your passion to fish and will fish in your local area so he/she should be more kknowledgeable However I have met some true fisherman who work the sporting good section at Wal-mart who are very kknowledgeable

I fish mainly for Largemouth/Smallmouth Bass, Northerns, Crappie, Brook Trout, & Walleye. On occasion Salmon. (I live in MN currently.)However, I lived in Fla most of my life, and do LOVE to catch Reds, Spec Trout, Flounder, Sheephead, Spanish Mac’s, Etc. Currently, I have fallen in love with the Pflueger “Supreme” reel, (although all of the reels I own are either Daiwa or Shimano). And love my Fenwick “Worm & Jig” spinning rod; my “Agressor I-Mag” bait-caster. Jigs are probably my favorite lure. You can fish them “deep”; “swim them”; Flip them; add a jig-spinner to them and you have a spinnerbait; they are “inexpensive” (Vs. Cranks, Spinnerbaits, Topwaters, Sticks, Etc) so if you lose one you don’t go home crying you’ve lost your $20 Lucky Craft; they can “mimic” anything easily-simply change Grub-body’s! There are only 3 different fishing “depths”; Top, Mid & Deep. Jigs have only 1 depth they are not suited for; Top. And few tourneys are won on Topwater lures! BUT MANY are won with Jigs!

If I could only have 1 lure,it would be a Mann’s Baby minus 1 crankbait,chartruese/firetiger in color. Easy to use, doesnt snag much, and I have caught a ton of fish with them. second choice would be a black skirted buzz bait.

Lake Ontario has many species of fish: lake trout, brown trout, small mouth etc.a multispecies bait like rapala floating baits or in-line spiners like panther martins will cover multiple species. small swimbaits are easy too.but what are you fishing for?lures dont require additional bait.

More hook points = more hookups. I’m not sure what type of lures you’re using, so I’ll try to cover what I can. Changing out parts is something many/most avid fisherman do regularly. eg. I throw Cordell pencil poppers, but the hooks bend because they’re weak, so I replace them with Gamikatsu 2x trebles. They are topwater lures, so there’s not much risk of over weighting them or ruining the action by changing hooks out. With other bass-type lures, buzzbaits, crankbaits, jerkbaits, swimbaits, etc…I usually swap the hooks out. With larger lures that have three trebles, I’ll generally take out the middle hook to prevent the hooks from touching and tangling on eachother while working the lure. Also., once a fish is hooked, it prevents the middle hook from interferring and potentially aiding in disloging the other hook. Trebles will increase the number of hookups because, well, there are three hooks, not one. Single/siwash hooks are better at keeping fish hooked. However, when using barbed hooks, it’s a little harder to make the comparison, but it’s still there. Single hooks also offer a longer shank, making it more difficult for a head-shaking fish to shake the hook out. When salmon/sleethead fishing with plugs, I’ll swap out hooks with single siwash on chain swivels. This has proven to be the most effective configuration for me. In general, changing hooks out will not ruin the action of lures. If there is a change in the action, 99% of lures made now are “tunable” in one way or another. Most manufacturers include the directions in the packaging.

If you’ve made three pretty good ones so far, then I guess you don’t need to learn how to carve without a lathe.Sandpaper and a small beltsander.
