In this review of Muskie Pike, I’m going to show you both the good and the bad. After all, what’s a review without some honesty, right? First, I have to tell you upfront that Muskie Pike is my favorite choice. Sure, there’s other products in the same class, but frankly, none of them as good (in terms of quality). I do have to say this though. some other products may be better, but based on quality and price, Muskie Pike is the clear winner.

The best ice fishing bait I ever came across for multi species is the rapala jigging rap. I would recommend though for pike, bass, muskie one of the bigger sizes and for pan fish a smaller size. If you are fishing in deep water use shinny or florescent colors while in shallow use any color you fell like. And don’t forget to putt a minnow or wax worm on it for bait. If you are just going out after pike and muskie use a “tip up” with a sucker minnow or a regular minnow for bait.

Your ugly stick will work fine. Just fish with what ya got. I’m in Texas where the catfish are huge so I use a medium or sometimes heavy action rod. However, I was born and raised in northern Michigan where there are plenty of large muskie and pike. You might want to get a stainless steel leader. The pike have sharp teeth that line the entire top of their mouths. Regular line is too weak. I used to catch huge muskie and pike on a $3 Zebco rod & reel in the 1960′s. Anything that gets the job done. Right?.

Nathan gets my vote. The Bango Minnow is just a glorified Fluke or Senko rigged with a “wired” weedless hook instead of being Texas-rigged. And I totally agree, they are very small lures to use for Musky.Large Musky tend to want BIG dinners. The info-mercial where the guy is catching huge Pike/Musky with his Bango Minnow is a scam. (There are places in Canada where you could cut a 8″ strip out of your jeans, thread it on a hook, and catch your limit of Pike!)In other words, catching huge Northerns/Musky on a pristine lake in Canada (like they did on the info-mercial for the Banjo Minnow) isn’t very hard. The test of a quality lure is how many fish it catches in “used”, “over-fished”, waters. The Banjo Minnow catches more fishermen than fish!

  4. SageFly Says:

Troll buddy, if you have a nice motor then go for it. Think about it, when trolling you cover more ground and you follow a simple fishing rule “you can’t catch fish if your lure isn’t in the water.” Trolling lets you keep that lure down and the more you do that the more fish you can target.

Gunner, top waters are a good selection. I’ve never pike fished but most of the lures are just bigger versions of bass lures. Buy some 1/2 ounce rattle traps and the bigger number 4 or 5 Mepps In-line spinners. These are easy lures to use, just chunk and reel. They will run below the surface. Depending on fish activity, depends on where you will find the bite. In morning and evening would be the best times to use your top waters. As the day progresses, that is the time to use crankbaits, in-line spinners, and spinnerbaits. I would recommend using bass jigs also. These are a little harder to fish unless you’ve logged some time on the water. I use them, small ones and I underhand pitch them into brush along the shorline in shallow water. Rapala makes a jointed minnow that is a good plug too. Bass like plastic baits also, but that could be intimidating unless you already knew how to rigg them. And there is not enough space here to do so properly. I’m just trying to get some baits in your hand that work with little or no knowledge. However, if one was so inclined to try anyway, the Berkley Power Worm is a bass favorite. Texas rigged with a worm weight and correct hook is favorable confidence bait for myself. In the end, when you are fishing in unknown waters with limited knowledge, you want cover the entire water column, from top to bottom. This is how to problem shoot where they are. Ask yourself questions. Are they near brush? What depth was that? Was that a slow or fast retrieve? When you catch a fish, think what you did and imitate it everytime. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Bass Pro Shop has a good taxidermy and reproductions service. Their prices are listed.http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CFPage?storeId=10151&option=2&appID=39&SearchResults=EA&langId=-1&catalogId=10001

Muskie are rare in industrial Mass. Try heading to the Connecticut River in NH. Float down on a canoe and fish for trout, bass, salmon, carp, pike, pickerel and musky.

Yellows, chartreuse, flame orange. I gather the water is dirty.

In my area lakes everyone fishes a safety pin spinner for bass. And the smaller spinner baits for crappie. Spoons are only used at times for schooling bass.

a live sucker. 10″ or bigger under a float. okay, 6″ ones will work but l thought you wanted to catch the big ones.

I live in MN and a couple years back I decided to give The Gunflint Lake area a try , (over going up to Canada). I found a great lodge with fantastic fishing……….Here’s where I stay- http://www.gunflintpines.com/index.shtmlWe stay in the resorts “Camping Cabins”- http://www.gunflintpines.com/camp_cabins…They are super inexpensive, ($65 a night), have electric, (for running Hotplates, electric heaters and Fryers), have running water, have bunks and thick pads- they are very comfortable, (esp for a Mens-only getaway). We boat about 50-75 fish a day, (including Walleye, Smally’s and Pike). The lodge is on the border of Canada, (twelve miles from “the end of the road”). There are numerous lakes you can fish in the region, (just make sure to bring a canoe- many of the lakes are “no-motor” lakes). The scenery and wildlife is insane- last year we saw 3 moose, tons of Deer, a wolf, and had a Black Bear ON OUR CABIN DECK ! Needless to say, we shot a lot of pics……If you want scenery, fish, and comfort at an affordable price try Gunflint.More Southern locations with great fishing?Try looking for lodges in the Brainerd area- http://www.brainerd.com/Another popular southern destination is Mille Lacs lake- http://www.thereddoorresort.com/About_the_Red_Door_Resort.htmlHope this helps ya?

you would need a massive tankremember a muskie can grow upwards of 6 feet so probably 500 gallon tank would be fineyou could could make an inground pool for it.growing relative to the tank as said before basically means that the fish stops growing but this disrupts some of the organs thus killing the fishthere are many other things like chain pickeral that you could put in that would be fine in a large tank id suggest no smaller than 200 gallons still though.

If you live in the US chances are no where. Although fish laws vary from state to state fish that are raised as fingerlings by the state to supply stocking are not allowed to be sold in the state. I live in PA and it is against the law to sell, breed, transport out of state any native fish or turtle dead or alive.Your best bet as the other poster said is to go and catch one. There are some supplying farms however in Georgia and a few other states that you can actually buy these fish for stocking your pond, but we are talking about poundage of fish here not just one or two.You may want to call your local fish comission. If there are any of these breeders/suppliers they should be able to tell you where you could purchase a small amount.

I don’t ever recall a northern pike being taken from the Delaware river. If it’s musky you seek, travel a little further and fish the Susquehannafrom the Falls Bridge upstream to Tunkhannock – a local hotspot is where Tunkhannock creek empties in to the Susquehanna.Try big Rapalas. jerkbaits, large Mepps spinners. Look for an eddy or backwater and fish it hard.

If you are willing to travel a little ways Pewaukee Lake, and Lake Nagawicka in Waukesha county both have good northern populations. I know Pewaukee has musky but I’m not sure about Nagawicka. Hwy 83 runs right between the two lakes. On the west side of the hwy is Nagawaukee county park with camping and a landing for Nagawicka. Just across the hwy is a public boat landing for Pewaukee.
