I’ve never been a big fan of Rapala lures (or hard bodied crankbaits and jerkbaits for that matter) but I really do like the looks of the Skitter Pop. I was watching a video of a man using the Skitter Pop and he caught an enormous Smallmouth with it, the fish easily went 4-pounds or more. I really like the frog color pattern that Rapala makes in this particular pattern. The Shad Rap is a classic lure that definitely catches Smallmouth, and as you see, the X-Rap has been mentioned enough above. If you are talking about any lure or bait, for lures, a 2″ Bass Pro Shops Spring Grub will catch the heck out of the Smallmouth & Largemouth Bass, and I’m sure you’ll catch a big Trout or even a Pike with it also. Just rig it on a Jig-Head, then cast & retrieve slowly, next to the bottom. For bait, 3-4″ chub minnows (or any type of minnow) will catch the heck out of Smallmouth Bass, Largemouth Bass, & Pike. The smaller ones, 2-inches, will catch Trout too.

on either a sespending rapala minnow or a 4 inch watermelon colared gary yamamoto senko rig it either weedless or wakey style you can cast the senko a mile let it go to the bottom then twitch it a bit then let it go to the bottom again and repete the procces with the rapala minnow their are so many ways to fish it you are bound to find a way that works for you my favorite its to twitch it acouple of time and then let it suspened then do it again it looks like a injured minnow in the water but just find what works for you good luck and good fishing

Here’s my take on the matter. The best lure is what the bass are hitting on in that particular body on water on that particular day at that particular time.Sometimes it will vary from day to day.For instance a friend fished a bayou with a buzz bait and slaughtered them two days ago. On that same day I was deeper water points in the main lake and slaughtered them on crank baits. Each of us had on the best bait for our particular fishing conditions.

bass are fattening up for the winter. this is many anglers’ favorite season. bass will take practically anything at this time of year. many people like buzzbaits and spinnerbaits in fall. my pick for a hard bait would be a surface lure, a “zara spook”. but l am personally going to stick with my soft plastics, in particular, a “fat ika”. bass feed on crayfish year round, and while this thing to me, looks nothing like a crayfish, bass must think so as they go nuts for it.and why ANYONE would target small bass is beyond me. those can be caught by anyone at any time. get some bass learnin’ and a bit of experience and move up to 5, 6 pounds with the occasional 8.

Well now where to begin. Look if your looking for an honest answer then take a bite of this. Bass are a predatory fish. They stalk, ambush, and rush moving things naturally. If your looking for monster bass, then try using what you use for normal bass, the only difference is size anyways. They still eat the same thing, and therefor can be caught on the same baits. Don’t waist your money on that “big boy lure” because its pure hogwash! Use what you have or get something new, but don’t worry about what lure your going to get, because they all work if you know how to use them, and the conditions are right for that particular lure.

having the best baits listed by anglers is one thing but knowing how to present them is another. What is the last book you read about bass fishing? didn’t the author list his favorite baits in it and didn’t he also explain how to use them effectively?

A darker colored 4″ to 7″ Texas rigged plastic worm. If the water’s really dark and messy after a good rain, I’ll use a glass bead and a brass worm weight for a little extra noise.

Spinnerbait over the weeds and around timber in shad color with chrome blades. Lots of shad and minnow species up there — Just bring the spinnerbait over the tips of the weeds and you will slay them.Crankbaits around rocks. In red or crawdad patternOn deep humps use a fire tiger color to mimic bluegills

since they were still unable to catch any bass they switched to a different fish they thought might be easier to catch. now they’re finding out different.next month it will be “what is the best bluegill bait?”.

My favorite in the waters I fish in is the senko type lures fished weightless. After that I will fish a Zoom paddle tail worm fished weightless or a Zoom trick worm fished weightless. Over the last 3 years or so I have really gotten into the weightless plastics. But if I do go to a weighted plastic it is usually the Zoom Baby Brush Hog. The weightless lures are easy to fish and in fact in the real grassy places it is the only lure that you can use .

Since you are new to bass fishing, I would use a spinnerbait. In the murky water, use a darker color and in more clear water, use white or chartreuse. Once you get comfortable with artificial bait, try a plastic worm. It will take a lot more practice and patience, but the rewards are worth it. You can use buzzbaits, also, but not usually so well in murky water. The topwater baits (spooks, poppers, rats, etc.) are excellent also, but will take practice with working them.
