why is there an anode rod in water heaters?
a couple of days ago my dad removed the anode rod (or stink rod as we call it) because our water smelled so bad that we could'nt drink it w/o feeling sick. it smelled like rotten eggs and Rod Rods made the water taste like it too. well, we had only had the heater in for two months, but when we pulled out the rod, it was so black and gross looking it looked like it had been there for years! my questions are:1. why are the rods used?2. what is it made out of?my dad has been wondering about these very questions.also, does it hurt to remove the anode? our old heater never had one as far as we know and it lasted 13 yrs and the water tasted great.

A push rod rides on the camshaft lobe on one end and on the valve rocker arm on the other end. A simple way of determining which end of the rod goes where is to look and think; also you might look at the old rod. Also, look at the end with the hole and if it has threads in it, that is where a tappet is screwed in to adjust the valve, and it would be on top and come in contact with the rocker arm, but you must first get a tappet. I think you might be calling a tappet a cap; whatever, both push rod should have a tappet.

you can drive til they break but just so you know when they do break your car will go what ever way it wants to go and you will just be able to hang on and hope it stops.. not every likely they all bad at one time… easy to replace most cars i know of have only two a left one and a right one…a few have them on the back also you can call any parts store and ask about what your car has about tie rods and get a price of them and id cal la few places to get a better deal on replacing parts.. and no you dont want to drive it any more than you have to its dangerous to you and others… tie rods steer the car so when the break you cant steer and will most likely wreak so depending on how bad the are… easy to check by jacking it up and shake the tire side to side if it moves much you can see them .. if they was real bad they would have told you not to drive it home i would have .. told you not to drive it anywhere.. and really i think you should have another place have a look i dont see four of anything going bad all at once so it leadsme to think they are ripping you off but not knowing well your life depends on it

You should look at the idler arm and pitman arm as well they are known for replacement. Your tie rod ends may not have been the repair needed all along. Tie rod ends dont all wear out at the same time although if you needed to replace a tie rod for a period of time it will wear the idler arm quickly

really when it comes to buying a rod and reel… you get what you pay for. it also has alot to do with the size/strength of the fish you are fishing for, you need to be comfortable. The site below offers review, and many “other” options as well without breaking the bank

Yes, you need pinch-pleat drapes and the special hooks that you buy separately. You can get the hooks anywhere. I recently saw them at Walmart and Kmart.Pinch-pleat drapes can be more expensive though. Have you considered installing a regular, inexpensive rod that juts out farther from the wall than the existing one? Then you could put on typical rod-pocket curtains and they’d be right in front of the old traverse rod to hide it. I’m thinking that you can’t remove the traverse rod because it’s a rental, right?

Sounds like you just may. You need to check the rocker arm’s contact patch on the valve stem. Mark it with a Sharpie, use a solid lifter (or make one from an old hydraulic), adjust to zero lash and see where the rocker tip contacts the stem. The mark should be pretty much in the center with the correct length pushrod. If you get anything besides this with your current pushrods, you need to buy or borrow an adjustable pushrod to determine the correct length. Use the link I listed below from Comp Cams about how to determine correct pushrod length.

Take a section of hair, not to much, start at the very end, make sure you go all the way to the end, Put the paper on the ends, and start to roll towards the head, and clamp it.

It’s probably made out of zinc and it’s what they call in the shipping industry a sacrificial anode. When you have a combination of metals (say, iron and copper) in a water environment, the difference in the number of electron atoms in the two metals actually causes a very small electric current to flow. When this current flows, it causes a corrosion called galvanic corrosion between the dissimilar metals. So, a piece of zinc is installed which then corrodes instead of the copper or iron parts. That’s why it’s called a sacrificial anode, because you sacrifice a useless zinc part instead of allowing the useful other metal parts to corrode.

The guides are attached with thread and then coated with some kind of epoxy or varnish. You need some single edge razor blades and a heat source to warm what ever finish was used. I warm the finish and cut the thread on top of the guide against the metal foot. This way I don’t damage the rod blank. Try to remove the thread by unwrapping it and using the minimal amounts of cuts, and warm if necessary. Change blades as needed as they dull fast and will cause more problems later if you cut into the rod .On older rods the epoxy used was fast curing and will chip and not soften with heat. The same applies to rods coated with a varnish finish. Just take your time with these and try not to cut into the rod blank. When heating the finish remember to just WARM and avoid damaging the rod blank by overheating. I use a modified propane torch for heat but the Butane lighters with the long extension made for lighting candles work great, just move the flame and don’t over heat. They give a nice clean blue flame and don’t leave soot as a normal cigarette lighter will do. If you have a yellow flame you will have a soot problem that will cause troubles with applying finish to the new guides.

They make 96″ shower rods and you can cut them to fithttp://www.deabath.com/showerrods/showerrods.htmOR, you can get a custom cut length of PVC pipe (home improvement stores, plumbing supply outlets) , probably about 3/4″ to 1″ wide and buy the standard shower curtain flanges to mount it in at your hardware store.
