The MiceMy words spill out like micehiding in the cupboards and in the breadEach cracker is crumbledand humbled by gnawingThe tables are dusted withdelicate clawingThe marring is whisperedin squeaking silent soundImpossible to see butthey are rife across the groundIn bed they find the warmthin the goose down and the cottonnow sullied small diseaseswill soon go washed forgottenTrapping tactics once tried and trueseems wasted on these careful fewSnapping empty in the darkno silent stealing will squeeze them starkEach dream they waltz across the screenlike small and spying rolicking ribbonsThrough the Evergreen Tactics snowy evergreens and wanton queensyet waking finds that they aren't fictionTo tame them in timeis what must beSo no more is cradledby their incredulous creedNow that they have all run of the houseFrom the floorboards to the flueMy fighting is futile against this furred FaustFor in my great battles, my life they've consumedMy motions through doorsnow move with great heedover my rasped wooden floorsof naked tails and featherweight feetEach morning they findthemselves feeling boldand swim like sirensthrough my cereal bowlAt noon when I readthey shred and they gnawso I can no longer seeone word without a pawIn my evening baththey sport small diving bellsAs I dry myself offfrom my towel I shake twelveThey admire in the mirrorand prance piano pirouettesthey've failed to adhereto give respect to any threatOne day a magic made it thoughto the edges of my mindto cut short this ever frothing flowand put my tongue in a bindThen slowly, slowly, one by onethey folded flew and fellI'd hardly hope this trial was donebut it all continued wellOne night when they were scarce and fewonly the faintest furred remainedI wonderfully slept sound and anewHaunted dreams I no longer detainedThe lonely left began to nestle inan exodus through the sheets and bedeach whisker scraped soft on skinand climbed back inside my head
