I live in Oklahoma and my wife and I go to Galveston just about every year. I generally use my catfish rig as a surf rig. 9 foot rod with large capacity spinning reel. It’s ok to use it in saltwater as long as you do 2 things every time you go out:1. Be sure to rinse everything with fresh water once you get done. I’ve even seen some guys fill up a 5 gallon bucket with fresh water back at the campsite and literally dip the entire reel in the bucket and slosh it around a few times. 2. Keep everything well oiled. Be sure to re-oil it after each outing and freshwater rinsing. You can get cans of aerosol reel lubricant at wal-mart or a sporting goods store. I’m not sure if it’s much different than WD40, but better safe than sorry. As for the bait, I always checked with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department website. They usually have fishing reports or links to other sites with reports that will tell you what’s biting where. I also like to talk to a couple of bait shops to see what’s going on. a good bait shop will tell you what’s biting where. A bad one will tell you that whatever’s biting is biting on what they have a lot of to sell. Do an internet search for bait shops in the area that you’ll be in. If you can’t find a fishing report, you can at least get a few numbers to call and ask over the phone.Yet another helpful hint: If you’re surf fishing, use a 2 drop wire leader and a 2oz to 4oz pyramid weight. The pointed end of the weight digs into the bottom when it hits and keeps the bait from getting washed ashore with the waves. You can get the leaders at academy for about $2.00 each. Good luck!

The front drag means that you tighten the tension of your line from the front of the spool on a spinning reel and the rear drag will allow you to tighten or loosen the tension by turning a nob on the back of the reel, I have used booth and most people use the front drag type reels although some use the rear drag. Most of the time I take a front drag reel, I only have two rear drag ones and don’t really care for them. good luck and great fishing

The open face spinning reel is what you are most likely asking about. Just look closely at the reel you are buying. Many of them will come with and extra spool. Generally the line capacity will be different. Larger capacity spool for heavier test and smaller capacity for lighter test line. If you buy a reel with only one spool, try checking a shop that repairs reels and they probably will have extra spools from unrepairable reels that they keep for spare parts and will sell you at a reasonable price. Just remove the keeper screw from the end of the spool and swap.

They will work, but after lots of use they may not hold up as well as reels meant for saltwater as the bearings and other parts of the reel may not be as corrosion resistant. Make sure you rinse off your reels with fresh water after every saltwater outing, even if using reels meant for saltwater.

each reel has a a series of number on it like 4lb-250….the amount of line a reel holds depends on the line dia expressed as in this case 4lb line the second number is yards……but keep in mind unless your trolling you only use less than 100yrds anyway…..so the bottom 150 yrds can be the cheap stuff…and the top line the better quality line.

baitcast are the type you see most bass fishermen using, and are typical saltwater reels. Spinning are the type that have the spool exposed and use a wire “bail” to hold the line in place when youre not casting. You say “crappie” and spincast and I think youre talking about the same thing. Another style of spinning that has its spool covered, usually with a button release for casting. I Fish the Salt water surf real hard, almost every day in season. I have been using 2 Cabelas Salt Striker Metal for 4 years now and they are still 100% mechanically and smooth, the paint is a little chipped but that’s normal. Here are some tips to keeping your reels working great. 1. Unscrew the reel case(were the gears are) and pack it with red or blue bearing grease. I mean PACK IT. This helps keep most of the salt water and sand from getting to your gears and corroding them.2.Try to rinse your reel with fresh water every-time or at least most of the times you return from a trip, especially if it fall in the sand or water.3. Clean out the reel grease once a year and pack it with new grease. You won’t be disappointed with this reel, here it is, make sure its the METAL one, there are two models, the other one has a plastic body and will not last. Oh by the way, if you don’t like the color of the SS Metal, I believe the Pfleugar Medalist is the same reel, I will try to post it.
