I have done selective harvest on bass. Bass is good, but you need to remove the skin before cooking it.The guys on TV you mentioned, no matter what they fish for, the release the fish. They are not fishing to keep it, they are showing the TV viewer how to catch that particular fish.Ones who fish primarily for sport do not keep, although selective harvest is good for the body of water you are fishing.

For walleyes your best bet is to target rocky points or rocky lats with curly tailed jigs and minnows or tipped with night crawlers. If you have a canoe you can look for necked down areas between islands and drift through these areas with Lindy rigs tipped with minnows or night crawlers or bouncing jigs along the bottom. Casting towards shore from a canoe with deep diving minnow baits in silver with black back or gold with black back can be effective at times. Jigs work well at almost anytime for walleye and you can catch perch and small mouth bass on them as well. Salmon tend to stay in deeper colder water most of the time. If you go early enough in the season you might find them within the top 10-20 feet of the water column and be able to catch them on spinners or spoons. Mid to late summer your best best if you are in a canoe is to target necked down areas between islands with water over 50 feet and jig with big spoons such as a cast master in silver, rainbow color as well as gold. One thing to try if you are fishing in between islands is to start fishing the side closest to where the wind is coming from first. Bait fish tend to get funneled into these areas from open water and larger prey stacks up waiting for it to arrive. If you are casting to shoreline try and cast to shorelines the wind is blowing into, same concept bait is getting pushed up and the prey is targeting it there.

I live in Asheville and one of my favorite lakes is Lake James near Hickory. It has a great smallie population and largemouth too. Lake Fontana has walleye, smallmouth and largemouth and is more west in the mountains. Lake Wylie near Charlotte is a great largemouth lake. I have fished the New River when I was a kid.As far as rivers go we have the French Broad (smallmouth, brown trout) and Swannanoa(trout). My favorite lake here is a thermal lake south of Asheville that is electric motor only, Lake Julian. The power plant keeps water warm so fish spawn early and no smallmouth but the bass get to feed on the rare talapia population in the lake. The fish are always health and no trash on banks or in water. Local resturants serve the talapia from the lake. Good luck I dont know much east past Winston Salem.

Victor-You didn’t say what series you were looking at. Prices for the quantum vary considerably, and cost is probably a consideration. each reel has its advantages.Having that many fish come unbuttoned makes one wonder if it’s your reel that’s really giving you grief. My opinion is that the shimano has a superior drag

I think you would really enjoy Halibut, mahi mahi and red snapper. Very mild flavored fish that will go great with almost any seasoning and preparation.
