how to keep shad baitfish alive?
we fish with shad & have some left over occasionally so we put them in our aeriated bait tank in hopes of keeping them for Shad Bait later on. it never fails they die within a few hours. we've even tried putting them in our baitfish trap in the lake but they all died in there also. anyone have any ideas why this happens? or what we could do to keep them alive? there must be some way to do because if not how could the bait shops sell them?

Channel cats like almost anything you put in the water. I start with medium minnows (dead and cut a little to bleed) and nightcrawlers. I also use punch baits a good bit, like Danny Kings. My 2 favorites are blood and garlic. I also cure my livers before I use them; here is what I do: Get the livers and dump them into a bowl, keeping all the blood, cut the livers down to a useable size and spread them out on a platter are news paper. then cover them in garlc powder and salt (are garlic salt) turn them over and cover the other side as well. Leave them out for about 20 minutes this way then put them back into the container and into the fridge. I do mine a couple days before I go fishing not only does it flavor the livers the salt also makes the outer skin tougher and they stay on the hook better. Don’t forget not to cast to far out since most fish come up into shallow water to fed at night. Good luck

A size 2 hook might be a little large unless you are using minnows of 4″ or larger. For the smaller crappie or chub minnows a size 4 hook either through both lips or right below the dorsal fin might be better for you.

A catfish is really just an eating machine. They have a feed conversion ration of about 2 to 1 ( for every two pounds of food they eat, they will gain a pound. )I’ve seen them so many fish pellets, that their bellies stretch and you can see the outline of the pellets through their skin. A 1 lb fish can easily eat 1-2 ounces of food at one meal, but them might not eat again after gorging itself for a day or two.

For blues, Channels and bullheads? All those baits are good ones… For flatheads? Longear Sunfish(Red bellies or Green Sunnys), Bluegill, Frogs, Sand toads, Live shad or herring, Large CHUB minnows, Suckers work well, and believe it or not? Small bullheads make an excellent catfish bait if properly prepped before placing them on the hook……… Make sure it’s lively though…Oh and definitely check your local and state’s regs, codes and ordinances to be sure it’s LEGAL to use live baits, listed above, as well..

When the shad make their annual run up the Delaware river, they are regularly caught on shad darts or wooly boogers

Depending on the area (state) you fish, there may be a limit to how many you can keep per day. As for using them throughout the year, there shouldn’t be a problem unless local laws prohibit their use. Check with your local fisheries management. Now, I can get to the nitty gritty! Assuming that you are allowed to keep and use them through out the year, take my advice and BRINE them. This will allow you to preserve them in near perfect condition for a whole seaon in your freezer. Brines: http://www.pro-cure.comwww.fryingpantower.comwww.acfishing.comYou mentioned catfishing…you can use these baits for making dips, doughs and what not in the process. Check out these places and modify the recipes to include gizzard shad.www.katmasters.comcatfisherman.netHope that helps you out.

Go to a local grocery store and get some beef liver. Lots of people say chicken liver is best but it doesn’t matter. Beef liver though, stays on the hook better as it’s tougher. You can leave it out of the fridge to get it a little rotten smelling but it won’t matter. You can never fail to catch some channel cats with this stuff. You can also go to a bait shop and buy professionally made stink bait which also works wonders. Good luck fishin’!

Just-Me, shad isn’t neccesarily a live bait. Think of shad, which is what I use for catfish. I cut it up in chunks and cast off! Simple!

Yes there is a way.I have had this problem before and i told a biologist friend of mine about this and he come up with something…First you need a container thats smooth and has round edges inside it.NO corners… and a bilge pump to pump the water around inside and aerator pump to oxygenate the water and epson salt..to take away the amonia from the fish..Shad dies because they put of amonia and it burns there own gills…..For a container I like the orange igloo water cooler ..you can drill it and silicone it when adding your pumps and hoses. and use a plastic minnow net or sand flea net to get them out of the container..

Salt, has been used as an attractant for years and, is still used in some soft plastic lures, even today.
