Any Erie steelhead fishing tips for this time of year?
Heading up this upcoming weekend to some streams in Erie, pretty much right by the lake. Jigs Steelhead I'm somewhat new at all this and I was wondering if anybody has any tips when it comes to the type of bait that could work well this time of year. - I'm not fly fishing. Any type/color of little jigs work? I've mainly used salmon eggs or wax worms the few times I've gone.

Small is key right now. The stream levels are really low and clear right now so downsize and downsize again if needed.. If you can use single eggs, so much the better. Single or double maggots should work with a tiny jig. Mini Foo jigs by Weldon Tackle works well. Try the motor oil color and white as well. One more thing to remember..shiny split shot spooks steelies in clear water so get some that are dull colored.Concentrate on the deeper pools and look for fish that are rolling.Good Luck and Happy Thanksgiving to everyone on Y/A Fishing.

I know nothing about the chagrin I do know steelhead and have caught them in nine rivers from Topanga Creek north to Washington. the run in the middle to late fall to get the beginning higher and colder waters to allow them to where they were born so they in turn can breed as well. Land locked steelhead are trout (rainbow) they as well move out of lakes into the streams and rivers they were born in. Around here (the sierras) that’s about October 20th (certainly depending on cold fronts moving dates up or not) I have caught them on flies (all of them) and along with loving them to eat they are a formidable fight on light line and a fly rod. My son (in Washington) uses a mini spinning reel on a fly rod and uses crickets and wasps for bait and does excellent every year letting them float naturally under the surface with a split shot holding them down in shaded shallow moving water. Mine have (all but one) came on large flies looking like a huge red ant.

Welcome to the Pacific Northwest. The good news is…you are going to love fishing here. I am particularly fond of the Columbia River. The bad news is…salmon and steelhead fishing is a whole new ball game. I’m wouldn’t bother trying to accomodate existing equipment and techniques…you are going to have to do some assimilation. As you already know, you have to head down to the river and spend time with the guys who fish a particular area…techniques and terminal tackle will vary even within a relatively limited stretch of the river. And, of course, there’s no substitute for knowing the river. Also, the trick here is how NOT to catch bass when you are after something else.
