Eddie, I read every word of that and my heart goes out to you. I came from a good, middle-class background, big house, good parents, brothers and sister. Something happened to me, though, and I’m not sure what or when, but I started to feel the same way you do. I feel as though I could have written part of your post myself. I can say that I understand, that I empathize with you but you are right that it is much easier said than put in practice – the art of believing you deserve good things without coming off as narcissistic or arrogant. It is a balancing act of among other things, self-love, confidence and humility. I want to say something here to help you, but I’m afraid you will think I’m insincere or just buttering you up. But, all kidding aside, you are a good, decent guy who truly does deserve good things in his life. You are talented, creative, imaginative and smart. Don’t listen to those who have nothing good to say except put-downs. People like that are re-directing their feelings about themselves on to you. Just let it bounce off you. It means nothing to you. Just realize they are feeling bad about themselves and by bringing you down, it is the only way they know of to feel better. This is what I think half your problem is. When you are surrounded by negativity it is hard to remain upbeat and positive. My advice is easier said than done, but I think if you really try, you can do it: Believe in yourself. I know, sometimes it feels like everything’s so phony and that you have to play the game to succeed. But, maybe you can play the game your way and make it work for you. Those highfalutin people are really no better than you, regardless of whatever background they may come from. They’re just people with flaws and no doubt are not what they appear to be on the outside. This reminds me of the advice that is often given to performers to imagine the audience in their underwear – lol! I honestly do think that if you were just yourself, confident and secure, not overly concerned with others’ perceptions, you will do fine. You have a natural gift of getting along with people and making them feel comfortable. People like you. I can’t imagine you coming off as arrogant so don’t worry about coming across as over-confident. Maybe you are right about putting on the blinders and giving yourself a pep-talk. Avoid the distractions that have negative impact on you and create an optimistic, positive environment for yourself. Do this before the interview day so you stay in a good frame of mind. If you believe good things are possible for you and that you are surely deserving, then you have set the groundwork. I have faith in you. Go do it, Eddie! Whatever the outcome, you are still a winner.
