You could use your Jig without a trailer. Most people put trailers on their Jigs (including me) to make your bait bigger and tastier lookin’ to bass. I prefer Berkley Chigger Craws, both 3″ and 4″ size on 3/8oz and 1/2oz Football jigs.

  2. BASSMASTER Says:

crawdad trailers on a jig are great for all types of black bass not just smallmouth. so yeah next time you go fishin give a shot you’ll catch some good sized bass on them to and use scent i believe crawdad and garlic works the best well at least for me. Uncle josh jig trailers even work great they even have one shaped like a crawdad and all the pork trailers are scented. heres what the craw trailer looks like http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/SearchResults?searchOption=products&hvarSearchString=pork+baits&storeId=10151&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&CMID=TOP_SEARCH_GO Best of luck to ya and catch that big one.

fast moving baits don’t work very well in the winter, the water temperature dictates how the fish will react and only if it’s warmer will they give chase. if it’s cold they won’t run down cranks or spinners at all. I fish jigs fished slow and deliberate, I spend longer fishing each place I think a bass will be and focus more on the sunny side of rocks, stumps and trees. I use larger worms and then trout colored swimbaits fished like a jig, up kinda fast, and down slow is my best winter bait in larger sizes figuring also the winter brings rain and rain clouds the water to murky at best I would be using dark colors as well. I use rattles in my plastics in winter to maybe add a little something extra to the basses need to have my offering as well.

I bought some when I first heard about them. My first time using them I caught 6 keeper bass in 4 hours. I was fishing it more like a jig than anything. Throw it out let it get to the bottom then pull rod tip up and reel in a little, then let it fall back to the bottom again. Repeat. Great lure. Good luck.

  5. Ole Fisherman Says:

I tried the Football heads and found they catch more weeds than the regular Round heads or Arkie-style heads. However, the Footballs excel in rocky, light weed, situations- like places you usually find Smallmouth. My “go to” jig in thick, weedy, cover is “The Fang” (without the plastic thing-a-ma-bob) – http://www.lake-link.com/store/item.cfm?ProductID=122The hook on the Fang is already at a 45 degree angle so you don’t really need the “plastic locker” thingy. I usually use this as a trailer on the Fang, (which works well with the stand-up hook design)- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_90490____SearchResultsThe only problem with the Fang, (and many Jigs), is you have to replace the skirt with a70- 80 strand skirt- I pay a guy to make me skirts.

  6. BASSMASTER Says:

jigs can be fish either w/ or w/o but when i use a trailer i found it to be more effective, if using a trailer it is a good idea to use a corresponding color that is close to the color(s) of the jig. Best of luck to you and catch a big one.

I used to have the same problem…….the pork rinds do come with a hole in them but it is still hard to use so here is what I do…….. get an X-acto knife with the narrowest blade possible to make an incision in the rind (my brother works in a hospital and he got a scalpel for me). Make a slit in the rind with this approximately where you want your hook. I also have a 3 blade pocket knife that I adapted by grinding down one of the shorter blades and the resharpened the point ……. this makes and excellent toll for this operation. One word of advice……be very careful when poking your knife (or scalpel) through the rind. Lay the rind down and push the knife through……do not try to hold it in your hand and do it because you will eventually cut yourself. Remember to take your rinds off when you are through using and put them back in the jar of brine so that you can reuse them. Hope this helps……..if you need any further explanation please email me and I will give you some more pointers.Tight Lines

This is a great question. There are so many different styles of jigs on the market now. Arky jig and a football jig are my two choices. If you’re fishing wood or an area with lots of structure with snags of wood the Arky Jig will come thru the snags easier without getting snagged. I’ll work the Arky jig with my rod tip at the 10 o’clock possion to the 11 o’clock possion dropping the jig over each branch and back to the bottom. Remember to keep a little bow in your line and watch for your line to jump. Then there is the football jig. I use the football jig when i’m fishing rock or mud banks. I usually will drag the football jig by having my rod pointed towards the water 5 o’clock or 7 o’clock and sweep my rod tip. I usually work the football jig very slowly and even let the jig sit and shake my rod tip a little. This will cause the jig to stand up and look like a crawdad tring to defend its self. Watch your rod tip closely because sometimes you dont’ feel the bite as much as seeing your rod tip move. For trailers I will use pork if the water temp is 55 deg or colder on the Arky Jig. On the football jig I almost always use a grub trailer either a twin tail or a single tail yamamoto trailer. I’ve found when fishing a red mud bank or muddy water if I use a single tail yamamoto trailer with the curl of the trailer pointed down which moves more dirt, I’ll get more bites. I’ll use the twin tail trailers when i’m fishing rocks or swiming the jig. Since you’re buying your first Jigs I would recommend you buying the arky jig any brand name to start with. Go to your local tackle store and ask for the less expensive arky jigs they have. Stay with simple colors like all brown or all black. I will use black on dark days and muddy water conditions and brown on clear days with clear water. Remember to work the jig slowly and try to keep it moving. Shaking your rod tip will keep your jig looking like a crawdad defensive mode and an easy meal to a bass. You are on your way to catching larger bass. There is no doubt that the jig will catch larger bass and more of them then any other lure on the market today. After you have more confidence in your arky jigs go out and buy some football jigs and try them. Check out this site for your football jigs. http://www.berserkbaits.comThey will make home made jigs to your liking, I use their football jigs.I hope this helpsTight linesJohn

Eddie, I read every word of that and my heart goes out to you. I came from a good, middle-class background, big house, good parents, brothers and sister. Something happened to me, though, and I’m not sure what or when, but I started to feel the same way you do. I feel as though I could have written part of your post myself. I can say that I understand, that I empathize with you but you are right that it is much easier said than put in practice – the art of believing you deserve good things without coming off as narcissistic or arrogant. It is a balancing act of among other things, self-love, confidence and humility. I want to say something here to help you, but I’m afraid you will think I’m insincere or just buttering you up. But, all kidding aside, you are a good, decent guy who truly does deserve good things in his life. You are talented, creative, imaginative and smart. Don’t listen to those who have nothing good to say except put-downs. People like that are re-directing their feelings about themselves on to you. Just let it bounce off you. It means nothing to you. Just realize they are feeling bad about themselves and by bringing you down, it is the only way they know of to feel better. This is what I think half your problem is. When you are surrounded by negativity it is hard to remain upbeat and positive. My advice is easier said than done, but I think if you really try, you can do it: Believe in yourself. I know, sometimes it feels like everything’s so phony and that you have to play the game to succeed. But, maybe you can play the game your way and make it work for you. Those highfalutin people are really no better than you, regardless of whatever background they may come from. They’re just people with flaws and no doubt are not what they appear to be on the outside. This reminds me of the advice that is often given to performers to imagine the audience in their underwear – lol! I honestly do think that if you were just yourself, confident and secure, not overly concerned with others’ perceptions, you will do fine. You have a natural gift of getting along with people and making them feel comfortable. People like you. I can’t imagine you coming off as arrogant so don’t worry about coming across as over-confident. Maybe you are right about putting on the blinders and giving yourself a pep-talk. Avoid the distractions that have negative impact on you and create an optimistic, positive environment for yourself. Do this before the interview day so you stay in a good frame of mind. If you believe good things are possible for you and that you are surely deserving, then you have set the groundwork. I have faith in you. Go do it, Eddie! Whatever the outcome, you are still a winner.

  10. Bobbi Says:

Definitely haul him to every show, rodeo and goat roping that you can take him to, leave him in the trailer if he wants to squeal and act a fool, until he gets used to the hustle and bustle…then graduate him to being tied to the outside of the trailer…I would suspect that you are adding to the issue by going into the class just “knowing that he is going to act up” and he does. You need to get him to the point that he can sit quietly mounted, as close to the arena as you can get without annoying the horses in the arena and at the same time, take notice of what you are doing and how you are doing it? Has anyone else, who is experienced, attempted to ride him into the arena? That would give you a clue as to what is causing his problems. It doesn’t matter how old he is, if he isn’t seasoned, then he isn’t ready to go into a class. I would NOT buddy up with another friend’s horse so that your horse can lean on him emotionally, as you are only adding one more item to his list of anxieties when that other horse isn’t around. If he will allow you to ride him around and amongst the horses prior to the classes, I would do it…just don’t aggravate the other horses and riders as you are doing it. Tired is not going to make him calm, it is just going to make him tired, and tired goes away when the horse gets excited anyway…just think of how upset and anxious you get when you get to the horse show, and I would bet that you are also tired.

trailers actually affect the action of a jig quite alot.i never fish a jig w/out a trailer.trailers are sometimes needed to slow to fall of a jig,or give it a bigger profile.there a re many different types of trailers for a jig.i reccomend experiement with a few differnt types, and allways keep different ones in the tackle box.when worked the right way a trailer may look like a crawdad to a bass, which they love to eat.also u can tweak a jig, which i reccomend also
