Here are the top picks on Ebay for Trolling Lures.
I’m also including a personal review of Trolling Lures here.
Should I use leader, when trolling crankbaits for [big] striper, on my braided line?
I have 85# green spider wire braid for my biggest pole. It is a St. Croix premier mega swim bait rod. 8'0 extra heavy/ fast action. I use it for punching mats, heavy flipping, large swim baits, and big game fishing (sturgeon, striper). But im getting into striper trolling and this is by far my best pole for this. Should I tie a leader to it to troll? If so what should Trolling Lures I use. Note that there are many HUGE striper, and I am using 6" + lures.I was thinking 15 - 20# monofiliment, but I want to know if this is the best choice. I don't want to break line like I have many time before, but I don't want the fish to see visible line. Also how long of leader should I use for this?Oh just how visible is my line in the water? The green 85# spiderwire braid. How bad would it be to use it w/o a leader?Together you three answered my question perfectly. And I have the 85# mainly for punching these mats up here in the nor cal delta. Ive broke 35# on (im guessing) small fish wrapping around the weeds, i figured why not go big. Thanks guys. Im going to Bass Pro today for some 25 - 30 leader. But now Im trying to figure out which do I want more... Invisible Flouro, or Mono w/ the ability to strech and not yank my lure out of the fish's mouth. Any one else have thoughts on that?

I have only caught one kingfish and that was on a pinfish. I had 20 pound mono line and no leader, but that is not the way to go if you are targeting them. I know you are supposed to use a leader and fish in about 50 or 60 feet of water if I remember right. Hopefully there’s an expert on here that can get more specific.

In the Pacific, the best lure is the Marauder. This is a 10-inch plug you can troll at 10-12 knots, and the wahoo eat it up, much better than straight-running skirted jigs. I don’t know if it’s used off Florida, but I don’t know why it wouldn’t work.

Try darker color lures in murky or stained water they tend to show up better in these conditions and also use lures with more sound and vibration.Use spinners with gold indiana blades for flash and vibration and with blue, black or red skirts!Crank baits with a good profile to them with rattles!Soft plastic’s blacks, purples, reds, green, dark blue!Learn to work baits slower when water conditions call for it and rely more on scent, sound and vibration!Good luck and juztmy2 cents!

I agree with the above answer but if down riggers and dipsey divers are not available to you an option is lead core line:a brief description—http://www.lakemichiganangler.com/store/Cortland_Kerplunk_Lead_Core_Line.htmI am not a fan of it because it is heavy and you lose the “feel”of the fight but walleye and lake trout are different when hauling up and you wont notice it as compared to say, bass or steel-head.In my neck of the woods(eastern lake Erie,Niagara river)crawler harnesses are a go-to lure, deep or shallow any time of the season. We catch them deep and shallow as there is a resident population and the big schools that come east from Ohio. The 10 pounders are usually deep but we catch eating size yellows in shallow water on harnesses, rapalas, jigs, even drifted minnows

The marauder is supposed to be trolled between 5 and 12 mph. Skirts a little faster than 5. If you have both baits out I would try 8 or 9, also Try alternating your speed once and a while. Another trick is to put the boat in neutral and let the baits sink. I cant remember how many times I’ve hooked up while letting the baits “rest” for a minute or so.Also try fishing around floating “debris” I.E. weed-lines, floating drums, large pieces of plywood etc. Anything that can provide cover for the Mahi’s prey. Hope this helps. Good Luck

Here on Lake Erie we troll at about 2 mph and whlie I’m not a trolling expert we did ok. We long-lined some deep diving crankbaits and wiggle-warts about 50-75 yds. behind the boat. We would cruise the inshore (25-35 ft.) areas in an “S” pattern and covered about 2-3 miles in each direction. If you cant get your boat slow enough you might consider a prop cover or a drift sock. I think the prop cover might be the best choice though. If you use dipsy’s or jet drivers with spoons or such you might want to tweak the speed up or down a notch depending on current. As far as lures.. Hot-N-Tots, Wiggle-Warts, and deep diving crankbaits work well. For Spoons.. Stinger Scorpions have a huge color selection. They do well in the Great Lakes.Worm Harnesses and a night crawlerFor drifting there’s always the weight forward spinners such as the good ol’ Erie Dearie.Thats the best I can do for you. Hope it helped.

try 5-7 inch crankbaits (looks like sucker fish), if this dont work; try flashy bucktail spinners or spinnerbaits, and if these dont work TRY topwater lures. from past experiences, usually they eat big meal and the big meal takes longer to digest, they would follow your lures and wont bite. good luck!

depending on the weight of the lure one second per foot and that all depends on the flow of the water , but it’s a good foot note

The biggest lake trout on the continent have continued to be taken from the waters of Great Slave and Great Bear Lakes in Canada. The ONE lure that has consistently proven its worth in those waters is the “Five-O-Diamonds” spoon from Daredevil. The large spoon is bright yellow in color and fitted with five red diamonds painted on its surface. No one really knows why this lure is so popular with the lunker lakers, but as long as it keeps working, no one cares. They just keep buying them up every chance they get. I have some in my own tackle box as well.

That is a pretty nice lure. I just checked it out on their website. To answer your question, I would say yes. However, I think it depends where you are located and what you are fishing for. I live in Illinois and I guarantee I could catch bass with that lure. Anything smaller that a bass I wouldn’t think so. You could also catch a northern with that lure if there is any by you. For a lure that big, I would try fish away from any weeds, you don’t want to lose it. I would also use a heavier test like 6-8 pound. I have lost some bigger lures trying to whip them out on a four pound test line. Lastly, i noticed it said it is made for 2.6 mph trolling which could easily be achieved from shore. Be careful with that lure, it looks expensive Dude!

A very good, and perhaps the best is the spoon. I prefer Stinger spoons. I like to run these on a downrigger with a slip (cheater) line and also run them behind dipsy divers. These are not the only lures I use, but with the vast numbers of colors and their ease of use, they are hard to beat no matter what the conditions are.

Try using a new topwater popper bait called Camal Cricket. You can get them at http://www.popspoppers.com. There are others that might work also. They work great on panfish and bass.

if it is just marked, without any lead core, you can use it for casting.however, as mentioned, if it has a lead core, then no. trolling only.there was a camo braided nylon some years back. l don’t know if any like it is still around. but it was in varied color sections as if metered.

i’ve caught rainbow trout while trolling with light colored spinners — panther martins and rooster tails.
