I hope that you enjoy this writing. It is a free verse poem. If you refer normal prosed writing or rhyming poetry please don't read. Thanks for reading God Bless. __________________________________________________________________________________LOOKING ABOVEBy Daniel MappSilently I sit on the front stair.I turn my gaze unto the blue Darts Glow height.I sit watching as the Raphael cherubs. In my view I see a soaring singer. The chattering sparrow darts,I squint as his mating calls grow distantDual shards of a cotton mound I see. I observe the wispy strings. On the western breeze they travel,My mind conjures they are twin serpents,Yet their hisses, are unsounded to my ear. They slither across the golden orb's light. The glow rekindles as they drift westward. My eyes catch it half hidden,The late hour's pale face I spy.It is a mer ghost of its nightly complexion.I think of it oddly in its high position,For it is upward in the mid-day hour.I then stand erected for the departure inside. My sight of the height is no more.My watching has ended as the Raphael cherubs.

I like what you have to say – many of your descriptions are strong. “He shook his head, muttering something. Then his attention fell on the last shop.” This is a strong visual, although I would leave out “on the street” at the end of the last sentence. Some of what you have to say is, to me, a little too wordy (not a lot, but a little). It makes me want to skip a sentence to get to what is happening. For example “Her eyes were sapphire blue, and they met his as he peered into the store.” You might try something like “He looked into the dark interior, and met the sapphire blue eyes of the young girl behind the antique desk.” Its hard to pull out a sentence and make it work, but you get the idea. I would try to shorten this by maybe 20% – consolidate a few of the images and it will be more readable. I like your style, and I think this has real potential.

I thoroughly enjoyed it, believe your cousin will also. You seem to have a nack, hope you continue writing, as you show great potential in my opinion.

I enjoyed it. There were a few things that came to mind while I was reading, though.1. I originally thought you were going for an interesting meter. The first two lines made it seem like you were going to stick to a dactylic-style meter “da da DUM da da DUM da da DUM.” You stopped at the third line, but it left me with a taste, thinking how sweetly it would have read if you had continued the rythmn. 2. Some of the lines are a little awkwardly phrased (e.g., “Dual shards of a cotton mound I see.”). Since you’ve writted entirely free form verse, not trying for rhymes, meter, or structure, I’m curious why you’ve phrased things in this manner. It just seems like you’re just trying to make it sound more like a poem.3. I like it better when you write in the active voice than when you write in the passive voice. That is to say, I like “The glow rekindles…” and “I sit watching…” more than “My watching has ended…” or “…are unsounded to my ear.” Things seem more vivid in the instances where you use the active voice.4. I’m still trying to wrap my head around the phrase “as the Raphael cherubs.” My best guess is that it references how the Renaissance painter would depect child-like angels. The way it’s arranged, it seems like there is a “Raphael” somewhere that is “cherubbing.” Mind you, I like the concept of a Raphael cherubbing, but I get the feeling that I’m not understanding this phrase how you intend it…Overall, I like the imagery and the scene that you’ve laid out. I rate a 6.0-6.5 because of my reasons listed above and because I’m more conservative with points than other people.
