Yes. Spool it with 18lb mono. You can use braid or fluorocarbon, but since you are new to bait casting I would keep it simple and inexpensive so you don’t loose expensive line when you backlash, and you will backlash, it’s part of learning. Flourocarbon has advantages in being less visable to fish, so you can simply use it as a leader instead of sooping your entire reel with this type of expensive line.

Darn, and I thought I was the only one who likes catching pike. It seems around our(Mich&Ontario) area seem to want only walleye. Any flashy spoons or lures will do it for pike. I also like long A bombers.

Spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, swimbaits, spoons, live panfish, crankbaits, and jigs all work great. You’re gonna want to use a wire leader, as Pike have extremely sharp teeth that can bite right through your main line. I do a lot of trolling for trout and often catch pike which we kill up here in scotland.I would think that reel is more than sufficient, ive found that the part with always breaks or weaken first is the drag mechanism on all reels ive had.Its designed for spinning and bait. 300yards should be more than enough If you plan on using 10lb line”Diecast Drive Gear backed by three Shielded Stainless Steel bearings plus a roller bearing.” sounds a lot better than any reel ive used,And ive caught pike that have been far to big to land in net or even safe to land in boat. Had to build a sort of v out of stones and dragged it up with a gaff before we could kill it. Rod depends on if u fish from bank or boat.I only use shimano rods as many a trout have snapped other brandsIf u plan to fish from bank or both i would say go for a 8ft or even 9 ft, you want to be looking at the casting weight too.For example, I use a shimano spinning1707 , casting weight is 7-25 grams so mine is a bit light for casting large dead bait.U might want one that’s more in the 17-35 range but if you use a light spinner your not going to get a good distance.I buy one of those reels if i had the spare cash.If you have a bit of spare cash say £150 id go for the shimano super ultegra range for the rod.Simply because i bought a super ultegra fly rod and its the only trout rod the beast havent snapped. Landed a 12lb semi wild rainbow(escaped when small from farm) and it never snapped though we almost tipped the boat, lolonly rod that hasn’t snapped with a big one Really depends on how big the pike are

Fishing for Northern Pike, i like useing a nice spinner bait or buzz bait, also works great is jerk baits on top of the water, try white twister tail about 5 inches long useing a hot orange jig with a heave hook but really sharp, pike will bite off the bottom you might try your shrimp or sausage, also try live small bluegill or pearch hook from the back with a once weight and a 2/0 sharp hook, pike love bright colors baits, hot yellow or hot orange even a white bait, top water baits remember fish them slowwwwwwww..you will catch more pike.Good Fishin.

i caught over 100 in a day……..sorry…i live in minnesota….have a cabin in northern minnesotaand actually the normal for one day is about 20-60…but who cares…they are pike…damn gators

A light/medium rod, somewhere between 6’6 and 7’6 with modest sized reel with 8 to 12 pound line on it. Just cause Northern Pike like to play with their food, so I prefer sensitivity to strength.I like a dark green line Berkley Trilene XL.For the rod, can’t go wrong with the Shakespeare ugly stick for either spinning. I think on of their catfish rods would suit best, just for the added strength.The reel, I’d recommend a Daiwai if you could afford it, if not, a Shakespeare will get you through the season.

I am going to go with Tendokid answer. Bobbers and floats are lots of fun and at the same time provide perfect bait presentation. I see you fish rivers – you might want to check Bentley fishing bobbers and their river float selection. Theses bobbers drift a little slower in fast waters and they handle larger size minnows without any problems. the best times o’ the year is late fall through early spring for us here in the great lakes region. There are more places to get northerns here in michigan than ohio. if you want some great pike fishing, i would travel an hour or two to benton harbor michigan. there are many lakes down there (up there for you) that hold many many northerns. another great place to go to is greenville michigan, which is an hour north of grand rapids. a friend about five years ago caught a 40lb northern ice fishing on the private lake i fish on.good luck!
