  1. Backwater Charlie Says:

I’ve never been a big fan of Rapala lures (or hard bodied crankbaits and jerkbaits for that matter) but I really do like the looks of the Skitter Pop. I was watching a video of a man using the Skitter Pop and he caught an enormous Smallmouth with it, the fish easily went 4-pounds or more. I really like the frog color pattern that Rapala makes in this particular pattern. The Shad Rap is a classic lure that definitely catches Smallmouth, and as you see, the X-Rap has been mentioned enough above. If you are talking about any lure or bait, for lures, a 2″ Bass Pro Shops Spring Grub will catch the heck out of the Smallmouth & Largemouth Bass, and I’m sure you’ll catch a big Trout or even a Pike with it also. Just rig it on a Jig-Head, then cast & retrieve slowly, next to the bottom. For bait, 3-4″ chub minnows (or any type of minnow) will catch the heck out of Smallmouth Bass, Largemouth Bass, & Pike. The smaller ones, 2-inches, will catch Trout too.

  2. Ole Fisherman Says:

Soft Plastic lures, (which include worms, grubs, deadstiks, Etc), would probably work better in most cases. But, as you know, fish are “picky”. Sometimes, Hard-baits,(Rapalas, Yozuris, Etc), Spinnerbait’s, Topwaters, Etc can/will out-produce soft plastics. It all depends on the mood of the fish.If I had to pick a general “pattern” to start with, in most situations it would be:1. Throw 1/8-1/4 OZ spinnerbaits until you find a concentration of Bass.2. Once you find some #’s of fish, SLOW down and THEN fish the area with your soft plastic lures, (worms Etc.)Hope this helps ya out? Good luck!

  3. Matt33 Says:

a watermelon colared 4 inch senko and a watermelon trickworm rig wacky riged or texas and fish it slowly and if done right will catch you fish!

  4. Ole Fisherman Says:

Small 4″”auger-tail” worms or a 4″ Senko in a “natural” color. Auger-tails were very popular in the late 80′s-early 90′s. They have a “wounded bait” look that will put fish on your line. A-tails were “over-fished” and heavily marketed in the 80′s/90′s and seemed to go the way of the Do Do Bird once “dead sticking” with Senko’s became popular .However, other than a 4″ swimming Jig with curly-tailed grub, a Zoom Trick Worm in camo color(rig Texas-style), a 4″ Rapala Husky Jerk Minnow in Silver, any 4″ worm you are confident in using should do the trick. Shhhhhhhhhhh. Don’t tell anyone about the Auger-tailed worms! (smile)Other solutions?MAKE SURE to “juice-up” any lure you decide to use with attractant. Try downsizing your line to a 6LB Mono or a low diameter Baided line.If the braids color is an issue; use a flurocarbon leader in conjunction with the braid. Try to keep your lure of choice from making a HUGE splash when entering the water. Pressured Bass get acclimated to seeing “fake food” and realize quick that anything entering the water “incorrectly” is deadly. Try casting well away from the Bass and swimming your lure close to them and then letting it fall and sit. Pressured fish learn that a lure that moves super-fast is false. Hope this helps ya? Good fishing!

  5. Unknown Truth Says:

Well now where to begin. Look if your looking for an honest answer then take a bite of this. Bass are a predatory fish. They stalk, ambush, and rush moving things naturally. If your looking for monster bass, then try using what you use for normal bass, the only difference is size anyways. They still eat the same thing, and therefor can be caught on the same baits. Don’t waist your money on that “big boy lure” because its pure hogwash! Use what you have or get something new, but don’t worry about what lure your going to get, because they all work if you know how to use them, and the conditions are right for that particular lure.

  6. luv2seashore1 Says:

I still think and will always use my Canadian night crawlers with a spinner, preferably chartreuse and orange beads. I have fished for 47 years and have wasted my money on all types of crank baits, spoons, plastics, etc .and have always caught fish with my live night crawlers anytime of the year. I leave them long and dangling, with a chartreuse bobber and I flick the bobber to get the attention of the fish. I get bite after bite and have landed a 10 lb. bass. I have caught pike and even a muskie with night crawlers . I have seen and asked many anglers if they caught anything and they didn’t, but I rarely get skunked. One thing that anglers must do is keep their bait alive. In the warmer weather but even in the fall, I always carry a small cooler with an ice pack inside. I take what I need and put them right back . I have kept the bait alive and well in the crisper of the refrigerator for longer than 4 months. I reel in at different speeds as they like the movement and it also depends on the swiftness of the water. I live in New Jersey now but lived many years fishing the Great Lakes in Michigan and caught many species. If you are fishing in the winter , do not let the bait freeze, as they will die right away.

  7. BASS Fisherman Says:

I would have to agree to Markus, try soft plastics. I caught a 5 lb largemouth on a YUM 4inch “dinger”, it’s like a senko type stick worm. I actually let the line loose, and held the worm in my hand, and threw it up into the air. I found that a certain “kerplunk” made the bass hit the worm like it was going out of style. I was night fishing in a heavy pressure, over-fished lake in western Pa. If it is rather hot, I would try a YUM 7 inch ribbontail worm. They produce great strikes from some nice bass. I would have to suggest a slow retrieve with a few little jerks to make the tail flutter very fast. It almost imitates a snake. Of all bass lures, I am the most confident using soft plastics. As always, keep your line tight when using plastics, and your rod at a 9 o’clock position. When you feel the bass take the bait, lower the tip, reel in the slack, and set the hook with a good sweep up. I find that in my area that watermelon is the most productive color at anytime. I would suggest trying soft plastics in watermelon first, and then when you can use that type of worm efficiently, maybe try other colors. Tight lines.

l’m not familiar with this particular lure but doug hannon (the bass professor) has a snake lure that works. l have seen bass eat a live copperhead so l know snakes/lures will work.
