  1. Ole Fisherman Says:

All 3 are great for catching Bass in large ponds and small lakes. Spinnerbaits- In a pond situation, I would stick with single Colorado bladed SB’s in 1/4-3/8 OZ size. Use heavier Mono line (14-17LB) to keep the SB from rocketing to the bottom. (Most Pro Bass fishermen use heavier Mono for SB’s because it has a high floating characteristic and more line drag due to diameter.) A Single Colorado bladed SB can be burned on the top of the water mimicing a fleeing Shiner/Shad or Frog AND can be slow-rolled in deeper water. If there is a large population of Shiner/Shad IN the lake/pond you fish, then double Willows can be productive. How to fish a SB? The most important thing to remember about SB fishing is to KEEP MOVING. Pepper an area and then move down the shore- SB fishing should NOT be as slow as Soft Plastics fishing, (unless your slow rolling). That is one of the main issues most new Bass fishermen have with SB’s. A novice fisherman should utilize a SB as a “search bait”. However, someone with more experience could use a SB exclusively all day and do quite well.Make sure to vary your retrieve! That is the KEY to SB’s! Crankbaits- In a small lake/pond situation I would suggest you use Cranks in the correct depth. Color and depth rule Cranks! The depth of the lure also designates how and where you will fish it and what color it should (generally) be. Using Rattle Trap type lures are a fantastic way to find “active fish” – you would burn these at the depth you wanted. Cordell Spots are a good generic lure of this type that is cheap and productive- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_44610____SearchResultsFloating Cranks should generally be burned. If your fishing in gin clear water go with less bright colors, otherwise try Reds, Chartreuse, Sexy Shad, and Brown & Green Crawdad colors. For outside weedbeds in 12-15 FT try fishing a 8-10FT running depth Crank. For clipping the tops of weeds try a Manns 1- …..Etc. Use the corresponding depth seeking Crank for where you think the fish are holding. Soft Plastics- SP’s are probably going to be your most popular lure. Senko type worms rigged “Wacky Style” is all the rage currently, but “Texas-rigged” can be just as effective Use Soft Plastics around any shallow water, weedy, structure where a “weedless lure” is vital. Best “general” colors? Black/Blue, Black, Junebug, Pumpkinseed, Watermelon & Red Shad. This is all “basic” information. Add more info about the lake and the conditions you will be fishing in and you could get an even better “hypothesis”. However, some days Bass are finicky little sh*ts who want some crazy technique or lure. You just never know! But, I hope this helps you anyway? Good fishing.UPDATE: LMAO!!!!!! James you rock! (I know I should stop writing “books” for answer’s and let some of my fellow Bass fishermen get a word in edgewise, but I get so dang excited to talk about fishing I end up lose’n my mind! lol). I think James should get Best Answer- I agree with everything he said! (LOL)Good to see you back Wormist!

  2. qp727 Says:

I agree with the top answer.Denver lakes and ponds usually have trout, pike, and suckers. Down in Southern Colorado where I live we have them all and bass is included. Pueblo Reservoir, Vaco Ponds, Ruynon Pond, Trinidad Lake, and that lake the top answer mentioned which is located in La Junta. The southern part of the Arkanasas River also provided Bass fishing.

  3. Nathan S Says:

Best bluegill imitation bait I have is a swim bait. I have the 2 at the bottom and love them. Tru-Tungsten has the kind you can adjust the sink rate for running shallow and its about $20. Might as well go for the most realistic bait. The Reaction Strike I have in the waking model that runs right under the surface.

  4. flounderbytes Says:

Your crankbaits will work when they kick up tufts of sand and mud as they wiggle along the bottom. Now if you are concerned about your line being seen spool up with flourocarbon, it has the same refractive index as water… the fish don’t see it. Also try some topwater poppers early and late in the evening. Make sure to fish around some cover like pads, grass or downed trees. Part of the fun in fishing is experimenting and learning what works and what doesn’t. Catch a bunch and have fun!!!

  5. bassplayer_1313 Says:

most crankbaits have two treble hooks. they are usually about 3″ long. 11″ bass are not legal in most states. fish for 12″ ones.

  6. bassplayer_1313 Says:

the bodies of the most commonly used crankbaits are right around 3 inches, give or take 1/2 inch. the diving lip will make the overall length longer on divers.why are you after such small bass? those aren’t even legal in most states.

  7. Ole Fisherman Says:

Here are some types of freshwater lures in category’s:1. Jigs2. Crankbait3. Stickbait4. Topwater5. Spoon6. Spinnerbaits/Inline Spinners7. Soft plastic8. Rattle-Trap or “Rattle Baits”As a new fisherman you should concentrate on the Soft Plastic, Stickbait & Inline Spinner category’s. Why?Soft plastic’s- This category catches the most fish. (Period) More Bass/Crappie/Panfish/Walleye are taken on Soft plastic’s than ANY other type of lure. For Bass- Plastic Worms, Lizzards, “Senkos”, Etc. You will need some “offset” hooks in size 3/0-4/0, (Gamakatsu being a good brand). You will want to rig-up your Senko’s & worms “Texas-Style”. Some good brands to purchase??- Berkley Powerbait (or “Gulp”), Gary Yamamoto “Senko”, Zoom, YUM, Culprit, Etc. Crappie- Small 1″ Soft Plastic Tubes and 3″ plastic Grub-body’s with a jig take more Crappie than any other lure. Add a “Jig Spinner” or just purchase a “Beetle Spin” for a different presentation. Brands??- Berkley, Zoom, YUM, Etc. Trout- Small Berkley “Trout Worms” can be VERY effective! As are Berkley “Trout Nuggets”. Stickbaits- One of the most famous lure’s of all time is the original Rapala Floating Minnow! There is a reason it is still famous. It still WORKS!Bass, Bluegill, Trout, Crappie, Northerns, Walleye, all will take a Rapala! Inline Spinners- Bass, Trout, Crappie, Walleye, Salmon, Etc. Almost everything will eat a Mepps inline spinner! Inline spinners are esp deadly on Trout! Concentrate your wallet on these 3 lure types before going out and buying 40 lures from each category. Many a fish has been taken by a young fisherman with only 1-2 bags of Plastic worms, a couple Rapala’s, and 2 or 3 inline spinners!CATFISH- Catfish CAN be caught with lures but it is usually an accident. If you want to catch a mess of Cats you must use a Bait.Baits for a begginer- Old Hotdogs, Old cheese, Nightcrawlers fished on the bottom, Etc. There are as many good baits for Cats as there are category’s of lures! Hope this helps? Good luck!PS- If your not on a budget Jigs would be another good choice for Bass, Crappie, Walleye, & general panfish!

  8. Backwater Charlie Says:

Plastic worms and other soft plastic baits, lipped crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and top-water lures just to name a few. Try top-water poppers in early morning, crankbaits and spinnerbaits in the day, and soft plastics in the evening.

  9. Injun Says:

Yes they can but this trick may get you some good fish!Let them hang up and then reel down and jerk the lure free if in soft weeds and then when lure frees up dont reel line in for a second or two. That action is deadly on bass! I hang my baits up on weeds just so I can get some good action as I work the bait loose and then just dead stick it for a bit sometimes fish find that too darn good and eat the lure just as it goes dead!

hey man, even though it ought to have ga bull dog on it, i will shoot you asite that may be of some help. http://www.sportsteamfanheaven.com/Products/Florida%20Gators%20White%20Lure%20and%20Reel%20T-shirt.htmlhttp://www.pronto.com/mpm/Florida-Gators-White-Lure-and-p_1129230485-PP

  11. dirtydan2 Says:

Well ,that is the way all commercial lures began. They had to be made by someone and tested at some point to see if they would catch fish. Mr. James Heddon carved his first lure”a frog”. Mr. Fred Arbogast carved his firs lure from a piece of broomstick and after no luck with it put it away until a he and a pal looked at it ,did some modifications and the Jitterbug was born. All lure makers have stories of how it all began and most started with some imagination and the desire to catch fish on something they made.Good luck.

  12. 34Luke34 Says:

paint them the colors of the natural foods bass eat. for example, paint one like a baby bass, paint one like a blue gill, or any natural food a bass might eat. here are the colors you need on certain types of water colors and time of day: 1.) when bass fishing at night use dark colors like black, purple, brown, and grey.2.) in dark water, no visibility in the water or stained water use the same colors as stated above.3.)in clear water use the brighter colors like yellow, red, green, and blue.also remember that bass would rather have an easy meal rather than a meal that is hard to get. so fish them like a struggling baitfish or such.. good luck to ya!!!

  13. bassplayer_1313 Says:

l don’t know of a website, but generally speaking, use lighter colored lures for clearer water and darker colored lures for dingier water. in muddy or murky water, use the bright chartreuse and oranges. perhaps someone here knows of one. but l guess that’s why you’re asking here, isn’t it?

  14. fwlhntr Says:

i previously fished for bass with a swivel and caught plenty of fish but as soon as i stopped using the swivel i consistently caught larger bass. lose the swivel for a while and see how you do.

  15. coolguy Says:

  16. HTacianas_II Says:

You can put bait on a lure but it usually won’t help the fish to strike. Artificial lures work on sight and movement rather than taste and smell, and usually adding anything to them will cause them not to move properly. And if you’re fishing but not catching anything, welcome to the exciting world of fishing. :) It takes practice to get good at catching fish. If you’re fishing for bass, a good lure to start with is a plain old black rubber worm. Weight it and bounce it up and down on the bottom as you reel it in. If you’re using lures like crankbaits it’s usually a good idea to fish topwater early in the morning and late in the afternoon. When the sun is high and bright it makes fish spooky. A good rule of thumb is that the higher the sun is the deeper you should fish.Cast as close to cover, like fallen trees, stumps, and dock pilings as possible. Bass like to hide out behind cover and ambush their prey. And yes, you can fish in the rain. One of the best ways to learn to fish a local spot is watch what others are doing and imitate them. Good luck.

  17. Backwater Charlie Says:

You’ll be catching smaller and larger bass than 11 inches. It will definitely work. A 5 lb. bass, can eat a 1 lb. trout. Sounds crazy but THIS is a FACT. Yes, you do need those back hooks. The bass will hit the back of the lure probably 90% of the time. It would be better to have the back hooks and not the front hooks. Having those hooks missing may make the lure run awkwardly. If i was you i would put hooks back on the lure if they are now missing because of the incident.

  18. Injun Says:

#1-6′ or 6’6″ med hvy casting reel, braid or 14lb to 20lb mono for “heavy” cover!#2- 6’6″ or 7′ med to a med/hvy casting reel,8lb to 12lb mono!#3- 6′ to 6’6″ med, med/lt 6lb to 12lb mono!#1 I want to be able horse fish from cover and I want to move them!#2 I dont like to use soft of tip with a spinner bait because of vibration and if I am fishing weeds!#3 With a crank bait I like to feel what I am hitting and with the softer tip I can tel hard bottoms from soft or weeds or wood! But when I fish soft plastic’s and only working light weeds or cover I want a long rod med/lt to med a spinning reel and light line to feel the lure and for control of it also.I like a stiff casting rod to work topwater lures in weeds but a little softer one in more open water. You will find many personal choices and these are mine!
