you say natural baits and yes there are frogs float and swim, butterflies, wasps, crickets, grasshoppers, dragon flies, baby ducks are all living critters I have seen taken off the surface not to mention every kind of bait fish known the world throughout. of course I do not consider hot dogs as a natural bait, or dough, or Zeke’s floating cheese or berkeley power bait, or catfish chunks. The bummer about this is, the idiot who threw all his crap in the water should have had a ticket given to him and paid a penalty.

Smallmouth have golden and red eyes, I just think that is a species trait, or it might be what they call a Kentucky bass. As far as the hump on it’s back, that’s called getting shoulders, & it is a trait of the bigger fish. I read somewhere that it takes 10 to 12 years for smallmouth to reach the 6, to 6 &1/2 lb size. I guess that’s why the Illinois DNR changed the catch/keeper rate, according to size. They also have imposed a ban on the catch/keeper limit during the spring thru June? Not sure on the dates though. There are usually photos of the most popular species displayed within your states fishing regulations booklet, so see if you can match your fish to one of those.Goodluck & Good fishing
