I’m not quite sure what you mean by “sample” trout. I’m thinking you’re talking about hatchery rainbows. But anyway… hatchery rainbow trout, will have lighter colored meat. Wild rainbow trout will have brightly colored meat, pink or red. If they’re smoked, I believe the same thing… the stockers should still have a lighter colored smoked flesh and the wild ones will have a more brightly colored flesh. With or without skin also.

  2. Monster Fish Keeper Says:

I have never kept a trout, but when thinking of keeping a fish, you need to consider the possible adult size of the fish. They can grow to a max of around 36 inches, but even if you figure 18-24 for a captive fish, you are going to need a very large tank. I wouldn’t even say 100 gallons as a minimum, a minimum for keeping a fish of that size should be 180 gallons, and that is still small for a fish like this. I would not even attempt to try to keep a trout in a 30 gallon tank, you are just going to shorten the life of the fish and give it a miserable existence. Edit: A Brook trout would be the same as a Rainbow, and a Brown trout would defiantly be out of the question, they get larger than the Rainbows and the Brook trouts.Edit: Don’t feel stupid, it would be great to keep such a great looking fish, just not practical. You just need to rethink what you want to keep.MFK

Power bait by berkley – need to experiment with which color is working so having several different colors helps. I’ve had luck with any shade of yellow or chartruse or the chartruse and white and sometimes orange or red.buy yourself a size 16 treble hook and some egg sinkers (about 1/8 oz) and some size 14 barrel swivels and some 2lb or 4lb Stren. hook >>> leader >> barrel swivel >> egg sinkerthen you tie a 12-24″ leader onto the swivel – you need to experiment on your depth because the fish will be in different depths depending on the water temperature. If you see someone else catching fish look at what color power bait they have and how far it is above their hook. Leader is important too… I’ve fished right next to someone and matched their color and still didn’t catch anything – after an hour I asked and he asked me what # line I had on – I said 4lb he said that was my problem – he had a 2# leader….Usually 2lb or 4lb leader works good… I stay away from corn because it kills trout – yeah they like it but they can’t pass it (poop it out) if you catch a trout with an inflammed a##hole – when you gut it – you will find corn inside it. They can’t pass kernels of corn – that is why I use corn scented power bait….http://www.troutlet.com/Berkley-PowerBait-C117.aspxthe nymph scent never caught me anything… these guys at troutlet are pretty good too. Good luck fishing and remember if you aren’t going to eat it – catch and release and please take your trash with you when you leave.

You got the right hooks already. Use live bait. Earthworms as bait. Tie on one of those size 6 hooks, pinch on a pretty small split shot, and put on a weighted round float. Use earthworms as bait. Fish sort of deep, around 2 feet. Switch up the bait and use corn. Stocked trout think corn is the pellets that they were fed when they were a baby and love it. Fish it just like the earthworm.

  8. Zachary S Says:

I have found that live night crawlers tend to work the best. If you don’t have that you can always use powerbait it works just as well. If you use powerbait I reccomend the chartruese I have had good luck with it. From one fisherman to another good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Write on the trap “Rainbow Trout Only ” and “No eels Allowed ” ,,,,,,,,,, that should do it !!!!!!!!!!

  10. bassplayer_1313 Says:

are these the dead things that come in a jar or baggie?try ‘em but don’t get your hopes up. l’ve never done well on preserved minnows. might be the formaldehyde. l suppose cats might bite them but for trout, l would stick to more traditional baits : worms, eggs, power bait. most likely do best with small spinners and spoons. the thomas buoyant is hot. a panther martin is another good one.try a fly and a bubble if using spinning gear. that may be something new for you. it works.

  11. Dune Says:

It will be tasty, but the safety will depend upon pollution in the river or stream.I would try a thin slice to taste test with the next one I caught. It isn’t something I have tried though.

  12. Big Joe Says:

worms/ wax worms. if all else fails try powerbait

  13. chefjoezieger Says:

pan fry.dredge in flour, place meat side down in hot grease till brown flip over and cook outside. with hot grease, whole process should take less than 5 min. trout is a very lean, thin fish.

  14. enufofthisshit Says:

EAT ‘EM!!these are stocked fish that should have been raised in clean water and will not have had enough time to build up any toxins in their systems by time they are caught.BTW… in the spring, while the ice is melting from cherry creek reservoir, l had great fishing many years ago by casting thin fins (any lipless crankbait should work well) in a shad finish along the edge of the receding ice nailing large trout lurking just under the edge to ambush baitfish.
