All these fish can be caught 24 hours per day depending how good the feed is for any given area. But if I was going to pick times of the day I would choose for someone just before daybreak to 10am for bass and pike then again 2 hours til dark and 2 hou rs after dark. And for cats 2 hours before dark til midnight! You will find fish feed at different times in any body of water so that means that bass may feed heavy in morning hours on one side of a lake than bass at other places in the same lake.I find that I love to fish the heat of the day in heavy cover for big bass with topwater baits or jig n pigs! But that same area during the mornings and evenings the fish are more to the edges of the same cover. For pike they tend to be slow feeders in the warmer water lakes so a great time to fish them is low light times.I start catfishing with great sucsess 2 hours before dark when they start to move to feed spots or in deeper waters where they will sometimes suspend to feed off of points, breaks or deep weed esdges.

the pike like a red and white daredevil in the spring. They really hit it when it smacks the surface with a slap

Several semi pro’s have told me they began in there back yard. They would let out an amount of line that looked like the average cast, then put tape on the spool, then real in the line. This help prevent backlashes until you get a feel for casting. If you were to backlash, it’s alot easier and quicker getting them untangled. As you get better, take the tape off and have at it. Just a suggestion I received from some tournament anglers.

Pike and bass flies tend to be bigger and heavier than trout flies, so you may need a different rod, Like 8wt or 9wt. There are so many flies designed for this type of fly fishing that we could be here a while. Try entering fly fishing or fly tieing in your search engine and go from there. I like hair bugs and poppers for bass surface fishing. They work for pike too but pike teeth tear them up. Pencil poppers made with foam last longer for pike. For wet flies streamers and Clouser minnows, big wooly bugs etc. for bass. For pike I like streamer type flies made of rabbit fur strips. I’m sure Dick’s would have some of this stuff. Fly fishing for pike takes sturdier tackle and leaders than for bass.

1st. Check some of my “starred question’s”. There has been many discussion’s on night-fishing recently.2nd. What type of lures or bait are you using? 3rd. At first “dark”,(when it finally get’s completely “dark”), fish usually need 1-2 hours to change over into “night-hunting” mode. In “jet-black” darkness they rely heavily on there sense of smell and “lateral line”,(kinda like our “ear’s). It takes them a while to adjust to “the night”. IMHO, go fishing right before “dark”. After it get’s “jet black”, leave and come back later, (1-2 hours). OR start your nightfishing around 11:30-12 and fish til 6 am. Your “peak” hours will be 3:30 and 5:30 am. Best lures for night-fishing Bass, Northern’s,Crappie: #1 Spinnerbait’s in 1/8-1/4 sizes. Gold (darker colored) Colorado/indiana blades and “darker” skirt’s & trailer’s. “Slow-rolling”.#2 Swimming/Ribbon-tailed worms in darker color’s. “Slow swimming”.#3 Floating Rapala’s in darker color’s. “Slow swimming”. It’s important to note that repeated cast’s to the same structure/area helps. And a “slow, constant” retrieve helps too!Hope this info helps ya? Go see my “Starred Q” for further info! Good luck!

I like using #8 lb or #10 lb…Berkely Tri Line XT or XL for both panfish and gamefishYou also might use a small lod and reel with #4 lb or #6 lb line for panfish.Good Luck Fishing.

I’ve caught plenty of pike/pickerel/bass using sunfish and perch for bait…but they need to be small one and alive…bass and pike aren’t big on cut bait (cut up pieces of fish) like salt water fish are…
December 18th, 2010 at 2:49 am
Use 12lb. braided spiderwire with either a spinnerbait in shallow water or a deep diving rapala crankbait in deeper water…
December 18th, 2010 at 2:57 pm
Go with braid. Best of both worlds. It doesn’t tangle as easy on a baitcaster as mono and it’s much stronger and more abrasion resistent. I prefer Power Pro 30 lb. braid for multi-species angling. Casts great and can handle toothy critters.

It is impossible for largemouth bass and northern pike to interbreed.Animals can not interbreed even if they belong to the same family. For example, bluegill, crappie and largemouth all belong to the same family and there are no hybrids between any of them. Human and gorilla belong to the same family and the differences are very obvious. Largemouth bass and northern pike don’t even belong to the same family.Only creatures with same genus can interbreed. (Cole said exactly that and he is absolutely correct) Horse and donkey can interbreed. Smallmouth bass and largemouth bass can interbreed. Largemouth bass and striped bass can not interbreed but white bass and striped bass can. Northern pike and muskie (muskellunge) can interbreed to produce tiger muskie. Northern pike and walleye can not interbreed because they are too different. Northern pike belong to a small genus and they don’t have many living close relatives they could interbreed with; almost all of their close relatives were fossils. It would still be fun and very interesting to see a computer generated pic of northern pike and largemouth bass hybrid though.
PS: The term “BIKE” was very funny. LOL

When the water goes dark you need to go goofy. Chartreuse, purple, orange and green all produce. My favorite for this situation is a Rapala shad rap in chartreuse or any other bright color. I just caught a pig of a bass in a murky little lake in the suburbs outside detroit using that lure, crank it, then wait and repeat until you get your hit. Sweep all the structure too, theyll probably be held up in the weeds and so forth. Good luck and Tight lines

It sounds like you’re just encountering what most anglers scientifically refer to as “fish slime,” a clear, mucous-like excretion that I believe all scaled fish fish have on their bodies. Some fish have a heavier coat than others — eels produce great gobs of it when removed from the water to keep them moist until they can get back into their watery home. In any case, the slime protects the fish from their environment (bacteria, parasites, etc.) and offers less resistance as they move through the water. Although it has a fishy odor and taste, it’s as edible as any other part of the fish. I’ll usually pat most of it off with a paper towel after cleaning fish I plan to eat, especially if I have to store it in the fridge at all. Removing all or most of the slime seems to keep the fish at least smelling a bit fresher. I apologize if you know all about fish slime and you’re referring to some other type of slime that is particular to the pike and bass you’re catching. I was a little unclear about what you mean by you “get” a gooey substance. However, if you’re finding some conspicuous source of additional slime inside the fish or something (in addition to regular fish slime), then I’d be more than slightly concerned about the health of the fish…

1. Spinnerbait’s2.Plastic Worms3. Jig’s4. Rapala-type floating/diving minnow’s(hard plastic’s)These are your “basic” 4 lures. It’s important to have “some” of these basic 4 when seriously fishing for Bass, Snakes, ‘Eye’s, Etc.Everyone has their fav. My fav may not work where you are. But, here is a list of what you will usually find in my tackle box:1. Various types/styles of Berkley “Gulp”&”Power Worm” product’s (curly-tailed grubs, worms, trailer’s, Etc.)2. Various Rapala/Yozuri/Cotton Cordell/Rebel hard plastic lures.3. Various spinnerbait’s & In-line spinner’s: Titanium T1, “Jig-spinner’s”, Strike King “Midnight Special’s”,”Mini-King’s”, Etc.4. Many, many variety’s of Jig’s in different weight’s.5. Topwater lures. If I had to pick 1 item that I COULDN’T go fishing without, it would be the Berkley product’s. “Gulp” product’s are so “real” you can use them as dead “bait” if you had too! And I don’t think I could live without my Jig’s &”Jig-spinner’s”. Hope this helps? Good luck on your new adventure into fishing!

Pike aren’t very picky when it comes to protecting their territory. I have the best luck on Spinnerbaits, Buzzbaits, Jigs, Crankbaits, and Spoons. All of which can catch bass if they’re in the area.Good luck!

I fish the Great Lakes, and catch pike and bass a lot. Casting long A bombers works for both. Pike hit well on large flashy lures. I like to drift, and put out a line with a bobber fishing a chub or large minnow, hooked through the lips.Set the depth so it’s about a foot off the bottom- in 4′-8′ of water. Then, I cast one line, and keep an eye on the bobber. OK, now for advice. Accept right now that they always bite-yesterday. Whatever you use, and however you fish- you should fished some other way. Fishing is an addiction. You’ll know you are hooked when you find yourself discussing worms and fishing reels. Next you find yourself shopping for a larger tackle box, and reading articles about new fishing lines. Keep jaw spreaders in your box for pike. And needle nose pliers. Pike have nasty teeth. Finally, it has been proven that the hours you spend fishing, don’t count toward hours of life- they’re freebees.

I like the Abu Garcia Cardinal combo with 14-20 pound braid for pike. ( you cant beat the price)
December 22nd, 2010 at 2:49 pm
It’s a good lure and attracts a lot of fish. Like most top water poppers, wait until you feel the weight of the fish (or a couple seconds) before setting the hook… and the use of a trailer hook will help you catch more fish. Tight lines!
