  1. BOBBER Says:

I use a mouth spreader witch will allow you access to get your lure out. You can get them at cabala’s or most bait shops and a long needle nose pliers or forceps. Be careful of the gill rakers as well.

  2. Ole Fisherman Says:

The problem with a Northern is their “Y-bone”. Do a Google search for “how to fillet a Northern Pike”.They ARE “bony”! If you don’t want to fillet them, cut them up into 2″”chunks” and fry them in peanut oil. (use your fav batter- Corn meal, Beer, Tempura, Etc). They will be bony, but good “finger food”. And yes, you have to gut them, and skin them.

  3. Fishing Says:

usually (like nearly all freshwater fish) its best to catch them early morning and during sunset. Its just the regular feeding pattern of most species of fish.

  4. Gus Thomas Says:

First, determine the size of the pike you are targeting. Normally, it is easier to catch many smaller pike than one big one. I would start off with casting flashy lures, do not be picky, almost any lure should do. Make sure it is big enough to attract the interest of the fish and crank fast and maybe a little erratic. Also, always use a leader. It will save you many line breaks.

  5. BLUE TIGER Says:

Northern Pike and Muskies are really so much alike, they both feed together and eat the same fish bait and lures, i think useing brighter colored lures along with useing smaller lures for pike, try useing spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, a jig with a white twister tail on it, and johnson silver spoons tipped with a white twister tail on it maybe 3 or 4 inches, both of these fish feed by sight and they are really good fighters.Good Luck Fishing.

  6. Michael Says:

Barracuda are much more agressive. They are not willing to attack humans almost nothing will attack something bigger than itself unless cornered, however they can mistakenly attack. For instance, a scuba diver can be holding fish, or something shiny, and the barracuda may attack it, and end up attacking the human by ‘accident’Pike are not in a situation or temperment to do this, unless cornered. All animals will choose to flee if possible, in an encounter with something bigger.

  8. Ghapy Says:

I have a northern pike tank dream myself, though I doubt finances will ever let me realize it. Based on their size and natural habits you would need a tank of at least 300 gallons for one. They are territorial and the size of tank for multiples would be truly massive. The tank would be a balance between open space and densely planted areas where they like to spend most of their time – this is how they hunt, they are ambushers of prey. The tank would need to include a chiller and they prefer slower moving water. For food they would do fine on any larger fish pellet geared toward predators. – you would be able to mimic their natural diet with fish, crustaceans, frogs, and even birds or the occasional small rodent.I don’t know where you can get solid information since a fish like this isn’t kept in an aquarium, but I imagine if you call a public aquarium that keeps them they could help you out – though they’ll probably put more effort into convincing you not to do it.

  9. •Poppy• 4 Days 'Til ND23! Says:

You don’t need any specific bait to catch the fish, you just need to be patient.Just click in the water and bring your hook down. Northern Pike are really long, gray-green (almost silver) and pretty shiny. Keep moving your hook away from debris so it doesn’t wind up broken, but try to get down low enough (they swim about mid-to-low level) to catch the fish.

  10. TopPotts Says:

North American pikes (northerns) get too large for most home aquariums. And they will eat your other fish when they get large enough. Even walleyes can get large enough to down your smaller fish.Northerns and pikes are the same animal. They are the only pike species native to North America.Other NA pike family fish include the muskie and pickerels. The muskie is definitely too large. Of the pickerels, the chain pickerel would probably be more suitable, but it, along with all members of the pike family, is highly aggressive. With the teeth these fishes have, your other fish would not live long.

  11. Ole Fisherman Says:

Northern Pike- Look for edges of weed-lines in 8-15 FT of water. Drill one hole just inside the weed-line and drop a small minnow/Crappie Minnow down deep. Just OUTSIDE the weed-line drill another hole and drop a Shiner or Sucker minnow 3-4 FT deep. A medium action Ice-rod with Berkley Fireline 4/10 or Berkley Ice line equaling 6-10 LB should be fine for Northerns. Walleye- Walleye also like edges of weed-lines in 8-15 Ft of water. Other areas to try are offshore structure ,(like rubble, rip rap, submerged reefs), where there is an abundance of small Perch. Find schools of small Perch and your odds on catching Walleye increase. Even under the Ice Walleye tend to feed during low-light times; Dawn, Dusk & Night-time. Use 4″ Shiners and Fathead Minnows for Walleye. Bluegill- Bluegill can be tough to find if you don’t have a camera or Vexilar. Your “best bet” is to find your local lakes thickest weed-bed and fish near that. Bluegill tend to dig deep into weeds during the day and hit the edges of weed-lines right before dark. Use lite line (like 2-3LB diameter) and Meal worms, Maggots, and small Earthworms/Red Wigglers. Crappie- Go to your local baitshop and ask where the best Crappie lake is located, (some lakes don’t support Crappie well)! Once you know what lake is a Crappie lake, go to the Dept Of Natural Resources web-page and get a map of said lake. Find deep water structures and drop-offs. Once at the lake, look for where all the ice shantys/ice houses are distributed. If they are all in one section it would be WISE to start fishing in that area. Crappie is one of the most sought-after fish through the ice and can usually be found by “following the crowd”. Crappie Minnows, Ice Jigs, Meal Worms, Red Wigglers, Maggots. Tip-ups- Every tip up is different. Follow the instruction on the box, (or if you don’t HAVE the instruction’s look for them on-line). A good idea with tip-ups is to use a larger bait, (like Shiners), and put it within site of your portable house or current Crappie fishing hole. Keep an eye out for the flag! Hope this helps ya? Good fishing!
