  1. William Says:

The only time I use live bait is for catfish….Otherwise I flyfish or use crankbaits/spinners/jigs…..Fishing with bait is boring, you just sit there. With lures or flies you keep it interesting plus you catch more fish if you know what you are doing.—————————————————For walleye try a Mister Twister in white or yellow or a natural shiny minnow crankbait like a Rapala….they cost a few bucks but are well worth it.

  2. Nick C Says:

Rapala, Yo-Zuri, Bomber, Strike King (sexy shad!), and Bill Lewis (Rattle Trap) come to mind. Rebel for poppers.

I did this and had pretty good luck with them. Just get some wood it doesn’t really matter what kind but balsa seems to do best. Carve it out however you want it and paint to your suiting. I took some small hooks that have a closed circle on the end of it (can’t think the name of them) and put two of them on the bottom. I then got some split rings and attached them to the screws with treble hooks on them. You can also put one of the screws on the front to attach your line to. Your now done and have a topwater lure. Mine even caught some bass. Good luck fishin’!Edit: I found a picture of what the screw I was talking about looks like. Again good luck fishin’!http://www.chiphi-pi.org/b2b/pics/Hook___Screw_Eye.jpg

I use them both a lot when bass or pike fishing and switch back and forth between the two all day long depending on a number of factors. I assume you’re wanting to know when to use each one, so here is my list of basics. Note that each one comes in a number of different designs for deeper or shallower use, more or less flash/vibration, etc but these are the most basic differences:Spinnerbaits:Use around weeds and logs. The single up-pointed hook is much better for passing around obstacles.Since they generally sink, you can technically use them in unlimited depth water but they are most effective shallow (10 ft max) because the resistance makes them rise the faster you retrieve. They have more flash and the more rounded the blade the more vibration but also the shallower it will tend to run at the same speed. Excellent choice in murky water.Spinnerbaits are a bit more of an attractor type bait, so fish that strike on instinct like pike and bass will take them readily.Crankbaits:A bit more realistic, generally a better choice for pickier fish like walleye and trout but equally excellent for more aggressive predators.Longer billed cranks dive deeper and also ride more vertical. You can often fish rip-rap and certain kinds of rock piles by bouncing them off the bottom with a dredge-like retrieve.Cranks dive deeper the faster you retrieve up to a maximum depth that depends on the style and line you are using. I actually prefer a deep-diving crank for quickly covering water over 6 feet deep if the fish are active.Avoid casting through weeds and logs unless you know you can avoid them. When fishing from a boat, I often fish two poles, one rigged with each and switch depending on the location as we move around the lake.

  5. Bret C Says:

Curly tails are King! Cranks work well on white crappies, but curly tail grubs are really the way to go. I know some guys that troll (pull and push) cranks, and they do work, but I would throw a thousand jigs before I’d even tie a crank for crappies.

  6. Golden Feather Says:

top water or real shallow 12 -14# mono helps keep the bait up.crankbaits that run from 4 -8 ft. 12 – 14# Mono, 10 -14ft 12# mono, anything deeper than 14ft either 8 or 10 depending on structure or cover.

  7. Injun Says:

Not really a crankbait is usually struck by the feed or kill instinct unlike a worm where as a fish may follow a lure for a time before it picks it up.But it some cases not yet proven certain times hook flash may spook any fish!

  8. AIRFLOW Says:

Ive never personally done that but i enjoy DIY tasks and making lures, so here’s my advice, firstly i assume your making it out of the plastic lures? if you are then a high speed drill is what you need and a drill bit for metal, don’t apply too much pressure but use a drill bit about size too big, so that the light fits properly, to stick it in place then 5 minute epoxy resin is the best as its waterproof and will fill the gap.

  9. Ole Fisherman Says:

If you need to make a diving crank go deeper use a 10-12LB Fluro leader, a swivel and a 1/4-1/2 OZ worm weight- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_7566_100010003_100000000_100010000?cmCat=CROSSSELL_SEARCH This rig looks similar to a Carolina Rig. You can also use split shot or a rubber weight. Here are a couple good Walleye lures- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_2963____SearchResults- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_1860_100005001_100000000_100005000?cmCat=CROSSSELL_PRODUCT To be honest, I’d def try jigging at that depth if your not gonna troll. For a lipless Crank?- Lipless Cranks sink, so count to 19-20 slowly and you will be at 20 ft, (they generally sink at 1FT per sec).

  10. AIRFLOW Says:

You have two choices, either Gamakatsu as already mentioned OR VMC trebles, both have needle points and both hook up well. Owner also makes some very durable trebles. Don’t attempt to sharpen your hooks as it often only works once then the hooks have to be replaced. Avoid dragging them over rocks if possible and check your hooks after every 6-7 casts on areas with under water structure.http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/pod/horizontal-pod.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/pod-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20166-cat20291&rid=&indexId=cat20291&navAction=push&masterpathid=&navCount=1&parentType=index&parentId=cat20291&id=0030844VMC also offers a dressed hook, which adds a little more flash to attract fishhttp://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20166-cat20291&id=0030866319919a&navCount=9&podId=0030866&parentId=cat20291&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=IK&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20291&hasJS=trueI wouldnt suggest adding a single trailer hook as not only will it make it fish unnatural, but its likely to foul hook the fish.
